Last academic year I completed the extremely competitive application and became one of the under 3% of eligible people to become a member of SELA. The aim of SELA is to produce future engineering leaders, as part of SELA I will be working with people form industry and my peers in a verity of workshops/group projects too develop my leadership skills. In our first year as a cohort of 40 engineers we will be planning and executing a project with the breif "deliver an event promoting STEM at sheffield to members of the public". As part of the project we are designing (Project 2050) I have been elected as the Project Leader. In this role I will be responsible for the overall organisation of 40 of my peers and making sure the project is a success. As part of this I will be developing my project management skills in a high stress environment.

I am currently in the powertrain sub team and running the first year integration for this year. As part of Sheffield Formula Racing, we (team of 40 undergraduates) design and build an open wheeled race car from the ground up and then race it at Silverstone at the end of the year against other universities from around the world. As a part of Sheffield Formula Racing this year I have gained a tremendous amount of hands on experience, I have worked with companies in a professional environment like Nuclear AMRC and MetLaze where I helped design and manufacture the jig for this year’s chassis giving me some experience using Siemens Nx CAD software and experience in a professional workshop. I was responsible for the design and manufacture of the catch-cans for last year’s car but have did much more than that. I have had training with CNC milling and used this to help machine this year’s wing moulds. As a team we use SolidWorks to design our entire car, so I am now confident using SolidWorks on top of Fusion 360 (that I have been taught how to use as part of my degree). This year I am designing the fuel system for the car which will involve such things as rationalising the fuel pump system and running CFD slosh simulations on the tank to optimise the baffling for the circuit we run at Silverstone. Being part of the team, I have learnt an incredible amount of team work and personal skills, it has taught me the importance of hard work and persistence as being part of the team is more work and more time consuming than my degree course.

In the role of marshal I was responsible for providing good customer servise, making sure that the trampoline park ran smoothly, maintaining the equipment to keep the park safe and administering first aid when nesessary. In this role I ran partys for 20+ children organising delivery of food and checking all the children had waivers for the trampoline and had been correctly safty breifed. I also ran vertual reality gaming sessions of 4+ people at once which involved alot of problem solving to fix unfamiliar hardwear and softwear to provide the best servise for the customers. Working at Adrenaline required high levels of team work and comuncation between the team members around a large park to make sure that all the customers were primeraly safe and secondly havnig a good time.

I have played for Cleackheaton from the age of 12 primeraly in the hooker position but moving onto srum half. Both positions require high levels of quick and clear comunication to my other team mates to optermise our performance as a foward pack and a team. Playing in a team sport has taught me many valuable skills that have proven pricless when working in group situations. It has also taught me diasapline and taught me to be reliable in all situations as other people rely on me peroforming my job well constantly.
