But sometimes due to a lack of information and sometimes due to an excess of it, we rarely know how those processes will unfold tens or hundreds of years from now. Ultimately the research is directed toward an enhanced appreciation of variability in the Earth system, which may help us predict future changes.The geological archive offers a rich array of natural experiments during which the climate and marine ecosystem changed, sometimes abruptly. My research focuses on reconstructing past interactions between the physical climate and marine biogeochemistry based on analysis of marine sediments. This is primarily oriented towards better understanding the nutrient supply to the fertile surface ocean, the availability of oxygen to organisms in the ocean interior and feedbacks these processes have on the partitioning of active trace gases between the ocean interior and the atmosphere.http://www.earthsci.unibe.ch/snf/paleoceanography/index.htm Show less
