Clinical Allergy Specialist
As a CAS I accumulated 2000 hours of patient interaction. With an almost nonexistent referral rate when I first on-boarded, I was able to increase that rate by 85%. This led me to allergy test 165 people and start 127 new patients on immunotherapy treatment. The treatment involved allergy education, allergic reaction protocols, and injection administration. For each new patient and treatment year, I compounded over 127 sets of vials, not including remakes necessary due to patient errors. Overall, I managed 200 patients’ treatment plans at any given time and consistently exceeded the monthly target treatment rate by over 7.25% over an 11-month period.
Research Assistant
As a research assistant, I helped with research focused on identifying and characterizing Tau oligomers responsible for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzhimer’s and Parkinson’s. I performed Bicinchoninic acid protein assays, western and dot protocols, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. I also developed experience in immunohistochemistry staining and microscopy while working on research to increase efficiency of diagnostic and treatment tactics for such disease. After collecting this data, I used ImageJ to enhance images and excel to organize and further extrapolate data. With this position I was able to further expand my knowledge of neurological medical research.
Research Assistant
As a research assistant investigating neuroplasticity in rats post stroke, I provided enrichment and food, marked the subjects for identification, and trained and collected data from 200 subjects pre and post stroke. This data contributed to presentations at the 2016 and 2017 Society For Neuroscience (SFN). During my time there, I also trained new members on handling rats and data collection, performed perfusions for preservation of brain tissue, assisted in craniotomies, and collected and stained brain slices for neuron tracing.
Medical Volunteer
Austin Pets Alive is a no kill nonprofit animal shelter. I treated dogs and cats diagnosed with parvovirus, distemper, or panleukopenia. Upon arrival, I first examined the animals for signs of declining health and charted observations. I identified two crashing puppies, requiring the immediate administration of boluses of saline-dextrose solution. If patients are stable, I would follow orders left by veterinarians which included administering medication intravenously and subcutaneously. I monitored, adjusted IV fluid intake, replaced saline bags as needed, and assisted with the placement of three IV’s. I often had to manually feed patients while also administering famotidine.
