I have long held an interest for electrical circuitry and electronics, and have developed this interest and built a career in this field. Following a hugely successful week of work experience back in school days, I was offered a golden opportunity for an apprenticeship, and I have continued to build on my knowledge since. My interests continue out of the workplace. I have been developing my skills as a hobbyist microcontroller programmer and enjoy interfacing with my electronics circuitry to enhance the capabilities of what they can achieve. I have been heavily influenced by my career, and have adapted my skills to automate and control parts of what appears to be a basic central heating system.I am a very keen campanologist, ringing bells at various locations around the county (and beyond) regularly. I also have a keen interest in various areas including railways, renewable energy technology, modelling, photography, travelling, cycling and walking.I am a Christian and have been associated with Stroud and Stonehouse Baptist Churches.I consider myself to be a very hardworking and conscientious person, and believe that I must apply the best possible work ethic to achieve what I am employed to do. I consider a little extra work at an early stage in a job to be worthwhile to save a lot of time in the long term. I believe that an eye should always be focused on the future in everything that is carried out and that an industry must not be complacent, but to continually evolve and enhance its offering.

Bms Software EngineerSevern Controls Limited May 2013 - Sep 2015Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GbMy role was primarily to create BMS controller software strategies for Building Management Systems for clients sites. The majority are engineered with facilities for remote monitoring by our Bureau facility, therefore they have operator screens to allow adjustments and monitoring to be carried out effectively without the need for an engineer to be on site. I aim to design software with adequate 'intelligence' to detect faults and react to them effectively without user intervention where possible. Faults should automatically report back to the remote Bureau or a clients own monitoring system for rectification, but any issue should cause as little disruption as possible. My responsibilities included enhancing control of existing systems by remotely connecting to clients sites and interrogating and modifying software to increase the energy efficiency of their buildings where inefficiencies can be identified. This work was carried out for a number of major clients across 800 sites around the UK and Ireland.I consulted with others in the engineering team at the company to assist with developing economic energy saving solutions for clients. Solutions include control of lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning to ensure only necessary energy is being consumed. To achieve this, energy monitoring is a key feature of systems - it is necessary to identify where and when energy is being consumed to identify how savings can be made and whether the quantity of savings justifies further expenditure.I was a key member of the Bureau Technical Support Centre, supporting the rest of the team and clients by bringing my engineering knowledge to the front line of daily operations. I was responsible for reacting to issues that arose from component failure to software glitches - this sometimes required temporary fixes remotely until engineers can attend sites to rectify issues.I retained the capacity to assist colleagues in my previous job role as required. -
Commissioning EngineerSevern Controls Limited Sep 2008 - Apr 2013Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GbMy role was primarily to commission new Building Management Systems installed at customers sites. These systems are primarily designed to control lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, but may also include other plant that contributes to a buildings energy consumption where efficient control can be achieved. Where possible, our BMS will also incorporate energy monitoring of the site to identify where and when energy is being consumed, data which is necessary to identify further energy savings and allow the system to be tweaked and adjusted to optimise efficiency.Commissioning generally involves the safe powering up of the system and loading the software program (where applicable), and ensuring all plant is controlled as required to a clients specification and is fine tuned to balance efficiency and plant life preservation. Any faults identified are reported to the relevant installing contractor.Variations to the job includes upgrades to existing systems to increase efficiency of a site. This involves replacement of older control systems with modern equivalents or retrofitting controllers where none had previously been utilised. This often requires rewiring within the control panels, and some installation of new cabling for control purposes.Surveying is often required to identify where energy savings can be achieved in an existing site. This may involve interrogation of existing controller software, identification of how plant and equipment is currently controlled, and identifying the practicalities of any proposed solutions.Maintenance of existing systems is also required for systems to continue to perform effectively. This may involve control component replacement where equipment may have failed, or general fine tuning of a system to ensure it is still operating at an optimum efficiency level.Experience includes;- Retail- Schools- Offices- Hotels- IT centres- Factories- Residential- Distribution Centres- Leisure centres/pools -
Panel WiremanSevern Controls Limited May 2008 - Sep 2008Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GbMy primary role was to build and wire control panels and distribution panels for commercial, retail and industrial sites. Involvement in the process ranges from the components being supplied to the workshop through to the finished panels being submitted to our test department. Panels vary significantly and involve wiring of power supply circuits and motor feeds in large cable sizes or copper bar to smaller control circuitry for controller, relay and contactor control, and communications wiring for networks (e.g. Modbus/Profibus etc.).Panels included Distribution Control Panels (DCP's) which are intelligent distribution boards, with switched circuits to allow areas of lighting and power circuits to be switched off at the board by an automated control system or series of switches. These boards often incorporate power monitoring.Building Management System (BMS) panels are a key product produced, which are designed to control a clients heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The system can also be interfaced with lighting and any plant that a customer requires controlled. The BMS panels contain intelligent controllers which have the capability to interface with AC control systems.PLC control panels are produced to any specification the client requires. These can vary in size and contain purely PLC controllers or incorporate motor control with various starter or inverter driven control.Motor Control Centre panels are also produced for motor control with various starter or inverter driven control.Main switchboards are also produced for building power supplies. These often involve a significant quantity of copper work and/or large cabling sizes. -
Panel WiremanStroud Switchgear Limited Sep 2003 - Aug 2007My role was to build and wire control panels for a wide range of applications. I began as an apprentice, and built up a range of skills, primarily in the panel building workshop, but also involving site installation and modification works.Involvement in the process ranged from the components being supplied to the workshop through to the finished panels being submitted to our test department. Panels vary significantly and involve wiring of power supply circuits and motor feeds in large cable sizes or copper bar to smaller control circuitry for controller, relay and contactor control, and communications wiring for networks (e.g. Modbus/Profibus etc.).I was involved in a producing batches of repeat orders where quality and layout was required to be precise and consistent. Innovations included standardisation in cable lengths to optimise consumption of cable and minimise wastage, and the adoption of clear to use templates to ensure consistency was met.I was also regularly involved in bespoke orders of panels, often including learning a broad range of skills for specific clients. These included;- Pneumatic piping for pneumatic switching systems- Fitment of Perspex windows for specific IP ratings- Making off fibre optic cabling- HT cabling for high voltage capacitor banks- Solder plating copper workProjects were often required to meet standards for countries abroad or for marine/aeronautical applications which may have needed to meet their own standards in cabling colours and voltages (and therefore cable sizing). Close liaison with project engineers was often required when working on bespoke jobs.
