Oasis Hospital is the oldest continually running hospital in the UAE and the first officially recognized not-for-profit health care provider in the country. As CFO of this 130-bed hospital, my responsibilities included leading the 72 members of the finance & accounting, revenue cycle management, and patient access teams. In the face of many new competitive entrants and significant overcapacity in the local hospital market, my foremost role was to keep key questions about strategic differentiation, productivity, managing for cash flow, and the need for a cultural shift ever in front of the organization.Diving deeply into those questions, our team pivoted to our strength in Women & Children’s services, stealing share in a heavily overcrowded market to grow revenue by 45% and swing from heavy losses to profitability.Additional contributions included:- Re-engineering RCM process to significantly reduce insurance rejections, generating an additional $2.3 million for the bottom line annually- Conceiving, designing, and implementing a business intelligence system bringing an unprecedented level of clarity to hospital decision-making- Drove the successful evaluation and subsequent implementation of new ERP and RCM systems- Significantly streamlined financial operations, reducing F&A headcount by nearly 30% even while revenue increased by 45%

In two successive international assignments with Nabors I led the Finance, Human Resource, and Administrative functions for two country-level operations. Responsibilities included tax and regulatory compliance, staff hiring and development, internal controls, cash and currency management, and contract management.My first assignment in Romania was to set up a greenfield operation. Starting with nothing but a computer and a chair, I hired and trained the local staff, implemented all corporate HR, purchasing, financial, and internal control systems, while simultaneously working with local partners to grasp the complex Romanian tax and regulatory requirements and design/implement compliance systems.After getting the Romanian business off to a successful start, I was transferred to Algeria which was in need of a financial and administrative reboot. Addressed a number of challenging tax and accounting issues to put the business back on a good compliance footing.

In this challenging but deeply rewarding role I led teams of 100+ Sudanese and expatriate team members as the head of two remote field hospitals serving the population displaced by the fighting and violence in the Darfur region.Every day presented fresh challenges, whether it was the ongoing logistical difficulties of sustaining a hospital in a remote area without running water and electricity, or ensuring continuous supply when the roads are controlled by a variety of militias with ever-shifting zones of control. My proudest accomplishment was overcoming a number of logistical and security concerns to open remote clinics in a region with many internally displaced people with no access to health care.

This role encompassed leading all finance and accounting functions for an airline start-up operating between Bali and key Australian and North Asian markets. Leveraging already deep experience in finance, I acted as a key business leader and executive in the forward planning of corporate direction and strategy planning. Impactfully, I improved analytical tools to optimize the airline’s fleet and route planning process which allowed for redeployment of assets to more profitable markets.
