If I have any “superpower” as a finance professional, it’s definitely not an ability to multiply nine figures in my head or have an unaided recall for the line items on last year’s marketing budget – instead I would say my superpower is my insatiable curiosity to learn the stories behind the numbers. And a belief that the best way to first imagine – and then deliver – on a radically better set of numbers for the organization is to hammer home the right questions.Every number on the P&L tells a story, and what I love about being the team’s finance guy is that I have a license and a mandate to go everywhere in the organization and learn that story. Which means getting out of my office and onto the factory floor or ICU ward or wherever the day to day decisions are being made about how money is being made or spent. It means building relationships and earning the respect of decision-makers throughout the organization and listening and learning from them about how and why they do what they do.And then it means asking them the right questions.Too many think leading is about telling. But telling is the end of a thing, not a beginning. It invites no one into a new level of thinking or creativity, it invites no one to step into higher accountability.That’s why I believe in the transforming power of leading through asking the right questions. Asking questions gives respect to your business partners, and draws people to new places where fresh and creative answers can be found.
