I had to apply via a 500-word essay, three letters of recommendation, and an in-person interview. I was one of six chosen out of the 200 applicants. This volunteering program encompassed two major tasks. First, I would spend four hours one evening each week working in the radiology lab. I helped check patients in and helped lead patients to the locations they were meant to be. On my second evening, I spent another four hours a week working in the Sterile Processing lab. Throughout my time there I worked on cleaning surgical equipment, taking inventory, and assembling surgery carts full of instruments that surgeons would use in their upcoming procedures. I was allowed to accompany workers up to the surgery floor and into surgical suits to retrieve used instruments in need of sterilizing. Both the Sterile Processing lab and the Radiology Department positions provided me with a window into the lives of adults doing real jobs.
