The wastewater sector has experienced the issue of rising levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas because of its unpleasant odor in residential areas and the corrosion on the water network infrastructure.My goal is to develop a sensor to measure H2S gas concentration and output the data to a cloud server in an IoT system. The end product is an embedded system and device specifically designed for a wastewater application. The thesis entails: - Determining the current H2S sensor technologies- Test different sensors in the field- Evaluate their performance based on established operating specifications- Select sensor that best conforms to the specifications- Design low-cost encasement - Embed software to process and send data to parent system and cloud serverThe technical aspects include using a microcontroller to take in input values of voltage and serial communication. I develop the program on the microcontroller to process the data into serial data which can be used for graphical analysis. A real-time clock (RTC) is used to monitor the levels of gas with a local time. CAD software is used to design the device and it is constructed with 3D printing.During my work, I have learned advanced techniques in Arduino(C++) programming and I have learned to talk between devices using serial communication and process data through voltage and serial information.
