As a sports science consultant I apply my knowledge of exercise, nutrition, and environmental physiology on a freelance basis to include advice, guidance, review and analysis of research, products, projects, and programs. I also create my own knowledge products, such as the Road Race Water Planner© app and free online calculator (see links below). My sweat loss and exercise fluid needs prediction algorithm (U.S. Patent 11219410) is the most accurate in the world and can be easily incorporated into smart watches and other wearables.

During my tenure with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA, I was a U.S. Army Captain (2000-2005), research physiologist in the Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division (2000-2018), and then briefly the Deputy Chief of the Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling Division (2018-2019). My research included the study of environmental and nutritional factors influencing human work performance. Specific aspects of my research included the study of human fluid needs, dehydration assessment, heat stress mitigation, exercise thermoregulation, ergogenic aids, and physiological modeling. I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on these subjects during my tenure with the Army. My most recent work has included being the Lead Project Officer on revisions to Technical Medical Bulletin 507, Heat Stress Control and Heat Casualty Management, which provides guidance to military and civilian healthcare providers and allied medical personnel to understand the diagnosis and treatment of exertional heat illnesses, the pathophysiological responses and adaptations to heat, implementation of procedures for managing heat stress, and much more. I was also part of the team that developed a user-friendly smart device application called the Soldier Water Estimation Tool, or SWET (see article link below). The 'app' simplifies complex sweat prediction equations to afford military users simple, accurate, real-time estimates of water needs under a wide range of conditions. It was my privilege to spend my days advancing health and performance research for our Servicemembers.
