Hello! I am a Physicist at Breathe Biomedical, a startup aiming to optically detect trace amounts of gas biomarkers in human breath for the early detection of lung and breast cancer. I have a PhD in Engineering Physics from McMaster University, where my research involved colour point tuning of florescent nanomaterials for solid state LED and laser-based display applications. I have over 8 years' experience in designing and implementing high brightness solid-state light sources, colorimetry, and optical/electro-optical systems. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Medical Physics with Honours distinction from Ryerson University. I have a strong scientific curiosity, and a passion for finding new and innovative applications of fundamental physics. If you’d like to get to know me better, I can be reached at samuel.peter93@gmail.com!

Physicist, Optical SystemsBreathe Biomedical Feb 2022 - PresentMoncton, New Brunswick, Canada• Constructed a free-space mid-IR spectrometer to perform trace gas analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath samples for the early detection of lung and breast cancer using cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS)• Demonstrated the ability to detect parts-per-trillion (ppt) concentrations of VOCs emitted from a calibrated reference source• Contributed to design calculations by determining minimum specifications for the bandwidth of HgCdTe mid-IR photodetectors to minimize noise without introducing signal distortion• Designed a database to store spectrometer measurement data using MySQL, and integrated the automated pushing of measurement results to the database into the LabVIEW control software• Lead the effort to identify the root cause of offgassing from manufactured breath sampling devices as the piston seal, and identified a replacement which provides a better seal, results in quieter operation, and reduced the component cost by 10x• Developed a methodology in Python to remove background environmental signals from breath measurements involving a linear regression approach to fit measurement data • Collaborated closely with cross-functional teams in all stages of design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to work through nonconformances from suppliers of manufactured gas handling system subassemblies, establish manufacturing specifications for critical parts such as the optical resonator cavity, and documenting procedures such as receiving inspection validation tests as work instructions within the quality management system, as per ISO 13485 standards -
Doctoral ResearcherMcmaster University Jan 2018 - Jan 2022Hamilton, On• Developed fluorescent rare earth and transition metal-based nanomaterials for use with InGaN microLEDs to enhance the colour quality of white light sources for display applications• Improved nanoparticle fluorescence efficiency by 41% through the introduction of a doped/intrinsic core/shell architecture, and demonstrated the ability to tune the peak absorption wavelength by 40 nm through the application of fundamental physics and chemistry principles • Leveraged defects present at nanoparticle surfaces to accommodate luminescent dopant ion concentrations 10x higher than bulk materials without observing concentration quenching• Designed comprehensive electro-optical systems, including a single photon counter capable of measuring sub-100 ns fluorescence lifetimes to demonstrate non-radiative energy transfer processes between co-dopant ions consisting of a free-space pulsed excitation laser, parabolic mirror, Si avalanche photodiode detector circuit, and high speed oscilloscope; as well as a fluorescence quantum efficiency measurement setup made from a free-space diode laser source, integrating sphere, and fiber-coupled spectrometer • Demonstrated the ability to remove and replace stabilizing surface organic ligands to alter the polarity of the nanoparticle surface to extend their compatibility with various dispersing solvents• Familiar with wet chemical colloidal synthesis, etching, and film deposition in clean room environments• Drafted annual proposals for funding agencies, industry partnerships, and academic collaborations• Produced four first author publications in high impact academic journals, including the Royal Society of Chemistry and The Journal of Luminescence, and six publications overall -
