About Samuel Peter, Phd
Hello! I am a Physicist at Breathe Biomedical, a startup aiming to optically detect trace amounts of gas biomarkers in human breath for the early detection of lung and breast cancer. I have a PhD in Engineering Physics from McMaster University, where my research involved colour point tuning of florescent nanomaterials for solid state LED and laser-based display applications. I have over 8 years' experience in designing and implementing high brightness solid-state light sources, colorimetry, and optical/electro-optical systems. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Medical Physics with Honours distinction from Ryerson University. I have a strong scientific curiosity, and a passion for finding new and innovative applications of fundamental physics. If you’d like to get to know me better, I can be reached at samuel.peter93@gmail.com!

Physicist, Optical Systems
Current- Constructed a free-space mid-IR spectrometer to perform trace gas analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath samples for the early detection of lung and breast cancer using cavity ringdown.
- Demonstrated the ability to detect parts-per-trillion (ppt) concentrations of VOCs emitted from a calibrated reference source
- Contributed to design calculations by determining minimum specifications for the bandwidth of HgCdTe mid-IR photodetectors to minimize noise without introducing signal distortion
- Designed a database to store spectrometer measurement data using MySQL, and integrated the automated pushing of measurement results to the database into the LabVIEW control software
- Lead the effort to identify the root cause of offgassing from manufactured breath sampling devices as the piston seal, and identified a replacement which provides a better seal, results in quieter operation, and.
- Developed a methodology in Python to remove background environmental signals from breath measurements involving a linear regression approach to fit measurement data
Doctoral Researcher
- Developed fluorescent rare earth and transition metal-based nanomaterials for use with InGaN microLEDs to enhance the colour quality of white light sources for display applications
- Improved nanoparticle fluorescence efficiency by 41% through the introduction of a doped/intrinsic core/shell architecture, and demonstrated the ability to tune the peak absorption wavelength by 40 nm through the.
- Leveraged defects present at nanoparticle surfaces to accommodate luminescent dopant ion concentrations 10x higher than bulk materials without observing concentration quenching
- Designed comprehensive electro-optical systems, including a single photon counter capable of measuring sub-100 ns fluorescence lifetimes to demonstrate non-radiative energy transfer processes between co-dopant ions.
- Demonstrated the ability to remove and replace stabilizing surface organic ligands to alter the polarity of the nanoparticle surface to extend their compatibility with various dispersing solvents
- Familiar with wet chemical colloidal synthesis, etching, and film deposition in clean room environments
Laboratory Instructor
- Delivered instruction in optical and electronics lab settings involving optical components and systems, as well as optical measurement instrumentation
- Managed 30-50 third year students across multiple disciplines, assisting with troubleshooting and creative problem solving of circuits consisting of embedded semiconductor devices
- Provided demonstrations of thermally grown oxide thin films
Member Of Technical Staff
- Assisted with the installation of new Unix systems for the undergraduate physics labs.
- Compiled the inventory of lab equipment and components.
- Performed maintenance and repairs of lab equipment.
Undergraduate Thesis Student
- Developed a simulation in MATLAB using physical principles to model the flow of blood through healthy and tumour-like blood vasculature.
- Performed statistical analysis to determine if a significant difference could be found between healthy and tumour-like tissue using ultrasound and microbubbles.
- Work led to an award winning dissertation titled “Quantifying Vascular Heterogeneity Using Wash-in and Wash-out Curves Following a Bolus Injection”.
Research Assistant
Developed an algorithm to simulate the growth and progression of cancer tumors using MATLAB.
Research Assistant
Manufactured and analyzed a substance to mimic the optical properties of human skin.
