I've always dreamed of being a farmer. Planning work far in advance, acting quickly when a crisis happens, seeing your work come to fruition, that's the life I want. Never knew how to get my foot in that door though, so I resigned myself to another interest, computers and IT.I enjoyed learning Pascal in high school, and dabbled with game development in Unity and C# over the years. Software development never struck me as a career choice though. After getting my degree in Networking Technology, and then later another degree in Information Security, I worked various boring tech support jobs, and then later some firewall and networking deployments. It was alright.In 2014 TEKsystems placed me at a company I hadn't heard of before called PhoneTree. I figured it would be another okay gig, working with new customer's IT departments to integrate with the PhoneTree service. After a few months I had the opportunity to assist with some automation tooling that required some customer specific C# coding. I wrote some code. I deployed it. It worked. Boom. "THIS! This is what I'm doing now!" I exclaimed. Management graciously agreed, and I made a lateral move into the development side of the house.I've since had the opportunity to break down monoliths into micro services, enable rapid CI/CD pipeline improvements, and delve into Azure more than is probably healthy for anyone. I honestly never thought I would enjoy it this much, the planning work out and seeing it come to fruition.
