About Samuel Smukowski

Recent PhD graduate in Genome Sciences from the University of Washington. The foundation of my training is in multi-omics analysis of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. My dissertation was advised by Dr. Paul Valdmanis and titled: Mislocalization of diverse RNA species to synapses in Alzheimer’s disease and aging. For this project I conducted both total RNA sequencing and small RNA sequencing from the synaptosomes of AD patients and healthy controls to identify differences in RNA localization that could be impacting synaptic function in neurodegenerative disease and aging. A portion of this research is now published in the high impact journal, PLoS Genetics, found here: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pgen.1011359Across my academic journey, I have had the opportunity to gain proficiency in many additional skills including mass spectrometry proteomics, scientific writing and illustration, public speaking, and mentorship. My scientific potential has been publicly recognized by the award of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, inclusion as a UW Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Research Education Component Trainee, presentation awards, and a biographic published by the Brotman Baty Institute at the University of Washington.I look forward to continued engagement in genetics and neuroscience research as I pursue current employment opportunities. My research interests continue to align with genetics research as it applies to neuroscience. More specifically, I am interested in pursuing gene therapy solutions to neurodegenerative or psychiatric maladies including Alzheimer’s disease, autism, depression, and addiction.
