During my Second Year of studying Economics BSC at the University of Portsmouth I applied to undertake a year in industry before returning to Portsmouth to complete my degree. I successfully achieved getting a job offer to work in the Debt and Reserves Management department of HM Treasury Office, an area of Government which I have grown to have a great interest in.The area of Debt and Reserves Management I work in oversee the UK's reserve of foreign currency and gold, hold responsibility for meeting debt management objectives, and provide advice on gilt issuance. This role has given me the opportunity to work alongside colleagues within various departments and positions. I have therefore gained invaluable insights into current day economic issues facing the UK and the world, as well as perspectives which deepen my understanding of economic theory.Outside of the 'economics specific' benefits of this role, my year in industry has also presented me with the opportunity to further develop my organisational and time management skills through involving myself in projects such as the Government Student Network scheme where I am currently volunteering as a Shadow Scheme Coordinator. I also undertook the responsibility of planning the Christmas Party for my team of >30 people (which I am sure anyone who has attempted to plan a Christmas party can agree is an enormous organisational project).My excel and bloomberg knowledge has greatly improved throughout my placement year and I am now able to independently create spreadsheets and gather data to my managers request. Furthermore, this role has involved a large variety of write ups for both internal and external release which has enabled me to improve the quality of my literary skills.Once this placement year has been completed I believe I will be in a far stronger position to provide support in whatever role I go into following my third year of studies at the University of Portsmouth
