  This summer I interned at NIAR Robotics and Automation located in the John Bardo Center. The robotics lab serves various industries by testing and validating multiple unique industrial processes. The capabilities of the lab range from quick prototypes to the design and integration of full-scale robotic systems. During my time at the Robotics lab, I primarily worked on designing an injection molding system for a company that hired the lab. I started by researching injection molding online and moving to collect books on the subject and reviewing the literature to grow my understanding. I am currently developing an injection molding system that meets all of the design requirements given to us. I focused on contacting suppliers learning about the technology in the industry and getting a quote for those systems. I also researched how to design injection molds and the specific elements of the part design that allows them to be manufactured without significant defects. We worked through redesigning the part from the company and finding a mold designer that could develop our parts into a metal mold that we could get machined. While focusing on that I also worked in many of the other subsystems of the project coming up with possible solutions and helping to overcome technical issues. My favorite part of the job was getting the opportunity to present my work in meetings with the company and speaking to many different suppliers and manufacturers in the industry. From work I learned a lot about: injection mold alloys, many different plastics and their uses, digital and analog signals, electrical components, and real-world design.
