Investing the impact of Lead (Pb) on wheat using compost as a biofertilizerThis study aimed to understand the changes in the morphological, physiological, and biochemical properties of bread wheat (Triticum aestivun L.) exposed to lead (Pb). The experiment involved germinating wheat seeds in six concentrations of Pb (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1 g/L), where germination rate, shoot and root length, and tolerance index were assessed. The different treatments were arranged using a completely randomized design. The results showed that Pb negatively affected wheat germination. Plants were grown in a greenhouse and contaminated with Pb solutions (0, 0.25, and 0.5 g/L). Pb contamination significantly inhibited wheat growth and development, resulting in reduced root and shoot lengths and pronounced physiological stress. To counter these effects, compost was incorporated into Pb-contaminated soils. The results demonstrated that compost-treated wheat exhibited improved growth parameters, including increased root and shoot biomass and higher chlorophyll content. Our study indicates that Pb pollution significantly affects the early growth stages of bread wheat cultivar under Pb stress and that the application of compost alleviated this stress which could be crucial not only for maintaining crop health but also for protecting food quality amidst heavy metals contamination.
