About Samuel Singer

Hi, my name is Sam - welcome to my profile page! I currently work for AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store as a Software Development Engineer, with my career geared towards senior full-stack engineering work; my goal is to become a technical software manager. I love to build new and exciting products or live services, and am always trying to learn something new - a new language or software stack won't scare me!After five years at Amazon, I've become my team's sole engineer for front-end development and maintenance - in fact, I maintain full ownership of our service's AWS console, and am responsible for almost all of the latest changes and improvements our customers experience. I've built a solid foundation of understanding for common web development skills, including JavaScript/Typescript, Node.js, React.js, HTML/CSS, and many associated node modules like webpack and babel. Many features available on our service's AWS console are supported by features I designed and implemented in the backend!I love web development, but most of my career experience has been in backend microservice system designs and development. Some features I have designed and implemented myself include public parameter discoverability, our AWS Lambda extension, and some major new features that haven't quite been released yet (but will be very soon!) These projects have all required a deep understanding of our NoSQL database, and I hope to continue building my career on similar live services or products. I'm very comfortable with Java and regularly work with Go and Ruby for new scripts or automation tasks, but I'm always willing to learn a new language - C++, C#, Rust, and Python all jump to mind. While working for Systems Manager, I have participated in many cross-team tasks with other Systems Manager microservices and AWS service teams.I also have important relevant skills beyond coding and systems development. In newer projects I have begun leading junior engineers as they implement the designs I have written, myself creating and assigning tasks to them. I hope that future positions give me a chance to continue building these leadership skills. As Systems Manager Parameter Store is a live service, I also have experience with live software service availability and reliability. I am regularly on-call, commonly perform minor fixes and improvements, and handle customer reach-outs and questions. As a senior engineer for my team, I am also relied on for having a knowledge of the service, and a guide for new team members.Contact me at samsing13@gmail.com, or right here on linkedin!

I formerly worked as a Software Development Engineer for Amazon in Amazon Web Services. More specifically, I worked for Systems Manager's Parameter Store team as a full stack engineer, engaging in both back-end and front-end work. My tasks included front-end work, updating and maintaining our AWS console page with new service features and operational improvements - I was our team's only front-end capable engineer, and effectively had full ownership of our microservice's webpages; performed back-end work to continue to develop, scale, and improve the service for AWS' users; and operational work to maintain and support my team's service, including an occasional on-call rotation for the service.

I used to lead one the dining units on campus, Newell's Deli. I managed seven other supervisors and about 40 students, handling communication, operation, paperwork, and discipline. Some tasks included approving time cards, working orientations for new hires, and hosting meetings for the student supervisor team every other week. I worked closely with my Unit Manager and the Student Employment Coordinator to better assist the employees I managed, from coordinating work schedules to assisting in the orientation of new team members. This was a part-time position, about 20 hours per week, I held throughout my entire university tenure, minus the last semester which I took off to focus on my remaining course work.
  • Amazon Web Services
    Software Development Intern
Amazon Web Services May 2017 - Aug 2017
    Seattle, Wa, Us
For my first foray into software development, I worked for AWS Systems Manager, helping to develop a new feature for the Parameter Store service that was eventually worked into a feature customers use today - policies for parameters. Most of my work was performed in coordination with my mentor, who was working on a closely-tied but separate feature. This component itself was implemented in Java and supported by technical design documentation I wrote to support design choices and decisions I made, which I still occasionally reference for new interns today. Another important skill I picked up during this internship was communication, which I held with a wide array of personnel including peer and senior engineers, to software and product managers, to real customers and stakeholders in the project.
  • Wisconsin Electric Machines And Power Electronics Consortium (Wempec)
    Intern
Wisconsin Electric Machines And Power Electronics Consortium (Wempec) May 2016 - Aug 2016
This was an internship sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. I developed a mobile application over the summer between my Sophomore and Junior years used to access, monitor, and control a home micro-grid power system. While the application was designed as more of a base for future development, I managed to make a wireless connection to the system to monitor real-time updates and information. The system itself was built using Ionic and AngularJS, so I was able to work with web-development languages across both Android and iOS systems. I developed the application entirely independently, though other parts of the micro-grid system were developed by other interns, and we collaborated as a team of 7 people.
