My name is Samuel Lucero and I graduated from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with a B.S. in Clinical Psychology and a minor in Cognitive Science while completing the institution’s Psychology Honors program. My interest in research grew through my experiences in the Language and Development (LAD) lab and Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC). These labs were fundamental in developing my knowledge base of scientific methods and skills necessary for completing a successful research project. During my time at UCSD I was heavily involved with the Native American student population as the co-chair of the Native American Student Alliance (now the Native American & Indigenous Student Alliance). In this position, I was part of a committee of students who planned and implemented a garden showcasing plants native to the area to be used for mindful reflection and educational workshops. Additionally, I assisted with the planning of a campus-wide event that included the campus community and local tribal communities alike.Since graduating, I was employed at Community Research Foundation (CRF) providing case management services to the unhoused with a severe diagnosis (e.g., Schizophrenia, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder). It was here that my passion for clinical work blossomed with a steady caseload of clients and meaningful, effective sessions. Currently, I am working in a full-time research position with the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA). My interest in addiction research has developed through our fMRI studies investigating the effects of psilocybin for smoking cessation and the influence of physician health programs (PHP) on patient outcomes for those with opioid use disorder (OUD) and/or alcohol use disorder (AUD).
