About Samuel M. Luby

UPDATE August 2023: After working for the past decade in international education and college counseling, I am returning to school to pursue my Ph.D in Higher Education at Florida State University. I'll also still be working as an independent college counselor, edtech adviser, and teacher at UCLA Extension. At FSU, I'll be researching and working on programs that aim to improve the success rates of students transitioning from high school to university. It is a big goal and will be modifying as we go along, but excited to create some solutions that can positively impact students and institutions. Below is my professional belief and goals statement!___________I believe international & experimental education can save the world. Ever since my year-long experience of studying abroad in Seoul in 2012, I have personally experienced the transformation of international education and consistently seek ways to expand this movement to organizations, products, teams, and importantly, students. I believe international education forces people out of their "comfort zone" and helps provide the platform for them to start discovering their true passions and skills. This creates a movement of global citizens across the world, ready to actively engage with each other to tackle the world's toughest problems.Yes, the age of technology allows us to access all of these perspectives and ideas from our fingertips, yet the transformative experience that comes from living / studying / working / volunteering in a foreign country for a significant period of time is irreplaceable. In addition, these sorts of experiences can fuel meaningful and effective action towards an individual's later education or work career. This can be a momentous experience at any age, but I believe that this is particularly impactful for young adults, especially before they embark on a significant chapter of their lives like bachelor or graduate degrees or entering the workforce. Therefore, I have dedicated my career towards helping students and organizations find, prepare, embark, and reflect on these experiences to maximize their impacts. Particular focuses of mine include college counseling (U.S. and Globally), Edtech, gap years, exchange and non-degree institutional programming, and all things China. Connect and share your story! Let's inspire the next wave of international education for the 2020s.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Research, Higher Education, Political Science, and 33 others.
