The Make Me A Match Project is a non profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of patients suffering from Leukemia and other blood related diseases by adding members to the bone marrow donor registry. We plan to do this by raising awareness about Leukemia, other blood related diseases and the need for bone marrow donors across the nation through arts, entertainment and social media networks with an emphasis on minorities. The Make Me A Match Project will also include a patient advocacy program geared towards newly diagnosed patients and their families, designed to prepare and educate them about the journey of living with a blood related disease.At 8 years old I was diagnosed with Leukemia, a cancer of the blood, which the doctors said the best way to save my life was a bone marrow transplant. This was very encouraging, but the odds of finding someone who would be a match for me was not. Even today the likelihood of an African-American finding a match is about 17%. After an unsuccessful family and national registry search, thankfully chemotherapy did the job. When I relapsed 2 ½ years later, a bone marrow transplant seemed to be the only option that would keep me from dying. I never found a match but by God’s grace, an experimental transplant from myself worked and I am still here today.
