Sam has spent a career at the nexus of food, health, and development. He has a depth of knowledge in the grocery retail landscape, gained over years working in leadership capacities at Texas-based grocery chain H-E-B, and with multi-state nonprofit Brighter Bites. In these roles, Sam took part in designing and executing innovative efforts that improved access, affordability, and quality of food for individuals and communities. Most recently, Sam was founder/operator of the community market, Little Red Box Grocery, which was an attempt to change the conversation and expectation around good food access across Houston (and beyond). It didn't work. At least, not financially. But it was never entirely about the store. It was about an idea: to purpose-build a space designed for connection + creativity. LRB started with food because the table comes first, and from there it grew. One store, on one block, in one neighborhood, making dents in the system as best it could. Sam maintains a steadfast commitment to creating an equitable food system, with an eye toward replicability and sustainability. In this capacity, he currently leads food initiatives for Concentric Community Advisors, and serves as executive director for Grocery Connect – a cross-sector partnership with Kroger designed to address various economic and social drivers of health in South Dallas.Sam began his career in international trade and development, working with the Commerce Department and World Bank. He has a BA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MBA from Georgetown, and was a 2018 Presidential Leadership Scholar.

FounderLittle Red Box Grocery Feb 2019 - Jan 2024Houston, Tx, UsLittle Red Box Grocery was a small-format, community store located in Houston's East End. Its mission was to change the conversation and expectation around good food access throughout our city (and beyond)... It didn't work. At least, not financially. But it never entirely about the store, anyway. It was about an idea: to purpose-build a space designed for connection + creativity. LRB started with food because the table comes first, and from there it grew. One store, on one block, in one neighborhood, making dents in the system as best it could. -
Executive DirectorBrighter Bites Jan 2016 - Jan 2019Houston, Texas, UsPioneering nonprofit with a mission to create communities of health through fresh food, Brighter Bites is dedicated to ending childhood obesity by delivering fresh produce and nutrition education directly into schools across the country. Serving as the organization's inaugural executive director, I worked on the front lines to help solve an intractable public health problem; introduced best practices to a theretofore founder-led organization; instituted a values-based culture with a dedicated and inclusive team; and, developed a long-term strategy for continued expansion and increased impact. I accomplished these strides working alongside my staff and Board of Directors, who came to rely upon my ability to bring creativity and diligence to complex issues. In addition, I focused on building a strong organizational foundation and establishing a vision that promoted programmatic excellence and efficient growth. In less than three years we scaled Brighter Bites from three to six cities, from 65 to 105 school year distribution sites (+62%), and from 9,500 to 24,000 (+153%) families served each year. In the process we distributed more than 19 million pounds of produce and 100,000s of nutrition education materials across Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City (Queens), the Washington, D.C. area, and Southwest Florida (Immokalee). -

Manager - Customer InsightsH-E-B Oct 2010 - Dec 2015San Antonio, Tx, UsH-E-B is one of the largest privately held companies in the country, operating over 400 grocery stores in Texas and Mexico, with over 100,000 employees and annual sales of $25 billion.Senior member of the research team charged with formulating data-based, company-wide initiatives designed to help H-E-B better serve its customers. Bridged the qualitative and quantitative sides of the house, helping to craft and tell compelling stories through data, and serving as the ‘client facing’ front person on initiating and executing a project, and measuring its effectiveness.Focused primarily on ‘Value’ shoppers (household incomes <$35k/year), and spearheaded efforts related to federal nutrition assistance programs SNAP (food stamps) and WIC, specifically in terms of how public policy impacted utilization, and how, in turn, that impacted sales. Programs implemented resulted in an environment of heightened awareness of and conversation around SNAP and WIC shoppers; during my time we expanded our SNAP share (topping 70% in most areas) in the face of declining allocation. In addition, I worked on projects related to specific departments; analyses of competitive retailers and channels (e.g., the impact of Dollar Stores and niche players such as Sprouts and Aldi); and deep-dives into specific trade areas (e.g., the Rio Grande Valley - demographic ‘tip-of-the-arrow’ in Texas). -
