As an operations support engineer, I worked with a small team to provide 24/7 support for drilling operations in Southeast Asia.We were responsible for receiving, displaying, monitoring, and analyzing real time drilling diagnostics and rock properties data from each of several drilling rigs.Engineers on the drilling rig also relied on us for assistance with technical tasks including, networking, configuring data transmission, programming down-hole sensors, and diagnosing unexpected tool behavior.For me, the most gratifying part of this job was working with other people to understand puzzling situations. I also enjoyed the challenge of trying to display data in the most meaningful way.

As a field engineer providing Measurements While Drilling (MWD) and Logging While Drilling (LWD), I worked with teammates to deliver quality services at offshore and land-based installations.In the drilling environment, various sensors are used on the surface and also as part of the drilling assembly to measure information that is critical to safely drilling and assessing the value of a well. It was among my responsibilities as a field engineer to install, monitor, and troubleshoot these devices, as well as scrutinize and deliver the collected data.Working on and around an operational drilling rig mandated a thorough understanding of and adherence to the safety and environmental regulations set in place by the government, the client, and my employer. Operations around the clock, with long lead times on required equipment, made effective planning, organization, and communication daily necessities.I committed to strict procedural adherence; swift, creative problem solving; and thorough, insightful failure investigation and reporting -- thereby working to minimize costly downtime.For me, the most exciting element of this position was the opportunity to study the techniques employed in measuring petrophysical rock properties and drilling dynamics, in addition to how this information is conveyed to the surface in real-time through mud pulse telemetry.
