I am a Research and Development Scientist that specializes in refining new ideas, making prototypes, and developing them into products. My understanding of physics, electronics, chemistry, and statistics, along with my knowledge of how systems work together, allows me to tackle any problem. I have 10+ years of experience in R&D as a Systems Engineer focused on analytical instrumentation: MS, GC, optics, assay biochemistry.I have an innate understanding of subsystems in and instrument: electrical, mechanical, chemical, and data processing. This makes me a good systems engineer, and good at troubleshooting systems.I have many years of experience as a project leader at different companies. I have taken several projects from ideas through R&D to production.I have extensive experience with Data analysis, data mining, machine learning, modeling, and simulations. I am proficient with R, MS Office, C/C++ , and Labview. I also have programming experience with Assembly, Python, Simion, SQL.I am a self-motivated independent researcher and good team player.

Principle Instrumentation ScientistPerkinelmer, Inc. Sep 2014 - Apr 2024American Fork, UtI can and have worked on all aspects of the research and development of instrumentation and accessories. I understand all disciplines in order to effectively communicate with everyone working on a project (chemical, mechanical, hardware, software, etc.). I can work on any aspect of the R&D process when needed; from theory, innovation, simulation, assembly, testing, and redesign.Recently, I have developed novel Gas Chromatography technology, and improved existing technology. I take new theories and ideas for improvements, research possible solutions, simulate when possible, design and test breadboard, design and fabricate prototypes for wider testing, and then implement new solutions into existing instrumentation. I have also been working on a novel approach to improve the low level data in mass spectrometry systems (the most raw signal coming off the detector). This is based on statistics principals and machine learning. It is an exciting solution that I should probably only talk about in person. I wrote a statistical algorithm that is a real time filter that approximates median filter by estimating future data points. The innovation that I am responsible for has resulted in several patents and trade secrets. As a project manager, I led a group of scientists in the research, development, and engineering of the next generation of thermal desorber. Our team designed, built, and tested experimental setups to demonstrate improvement of critical functionality. We integrated our improvements into the pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, and firmware design. We designed the new instrument with input from marketing and customers. We began fabricating and building the new instrument. -
Research FacultyBrigham Young University Sep 2013 - Sep 2014I developed the temperature gradient gas chromatography system. I gained an understanding of the physics of the molecular movement in chromatography. The manifested in a set of differential equations. I then developed a Markov chain simulation to verify the differential equation results, and added flexible parameters to better simulate imperfections in the instrument. The simulations showed that the tecnology had promise.I built an instrument to confirm the theory, and went through several version to improve the temperature resolution and flexibility. The results of this prototype confirmed the results from the simulation. -
Lead EngineerGbi Feb 2011 - Sep 2013I used and optimized a new AI learning controller. The controller was used to control non-linear processes, such as a sticky valve, balancing robot, and EEG wavelet extraction. I also wrote the user interface for this controller to facilitate testing and use.

Physical Science TraineeNational Institute Of Standards And Technology May 2012 - Aug 2012Gaithersburg, MarylandI created a machine learning algorithm to learn the true MS/MS spectra based on a large database of submissions. I worked with the peptide identification group with MS/MS data. I wrote R programs to manipulate and analyze the data. The result was finding 'true' spectra given a few replicates for a peptide. For this multi-dimensional data set I used clustering, data mining, and optimization to find a solution that proved to be better than present methods. -
Research And DevelopmentRand Labs, Llc; Orem Ut Oct 2008 - Sep 2010I headed an exploratory research team focused on new products. Along with directing the work of the other research employees, I designed and built the machinery and instrumentation to prove the theorized concept. I refined several proprietary technologies that remain very relevant and novel.

Senior ScientistTorion Technologies Sep 2003 - Oct 2008I led the project as a systems engineer on a portable GC/MS system and coordinated the efforts of engineers, working closely with mechanical, software, and electrical engineers. I was instrumental from the conception phase to manufacture and customer service. Additionally, I identified and implemented many subsystem changes to improve system resolution, detection limit, etc. For control and data processing, I used LabView and C++. To test the system, I personally took the instrument to Dugway Proving Grounds to troubleshoot in a hostile environment with chemical agents.

Graduate ResearcherUniversity Of Utah Sep 1998 - Sep 2003I developed optical based in-vitro diagnostic for DNA mutation detection of a single base. I customized an existing Labview program, and created mechanical and electrical subsystems in order to extend the functionality of the existing instrument. I also worked on the binding chemistry involved in the instrument. -
Assistant ResearcherBrigham Young University Jan 1996 - Sep 1998I assisted many graduate students with training and use of instruments, design and creation of electronic prototypes, and customization of existing instruments for their projects. I helped develop a combination sampler that could do capillary electrophoresis, capillary electrochromatography, and isotachophoresis in the same instrument.
