I’m a human centred senior product leader, climate nerd and former CTO/engineer who has spent my career building and scaling impact-focused companies in the US, East Africa, Europe and Canada. I’m currently shifting my focus from the health of people, to the health of the planet and diving deep into climate risk, resiliency and ESG with VIDA (www.vida.place). My mission/passion is to drive systems-level change in how the world approaches the climate crisis through technology.I bring a unique perspective from 8+ years of experience solving problems across geographies, industries, roles, markets and organization stages, including both for-profit and non-profit. I’ve developed deep creative problem solving skills, built grit through product development in rapidly changing, complex environments, and learn to act on new information quickly by getting my hands dirty and implementing.- Successfully brought multiple products through their full life-cycle, from 0, to go to market, to scale including launching and scaling a pharmacy POS to support hundreds of thousands of patient encounters monthly, bringing a first-of-its-kind lightweight Electronic Medical Record System to market in Kenya with a 90% retention rate, and launching CropConex’ green coffee marketplace with $35M in GMV- Helped to start and run three organizations where I led product vision, strategy and roadmapping that contributed to multiple $1m+ funding rounds- Experienced senior leader who has built and led culturally diverse, remote and semi-remote, international teams of up to 8 people across three organizations and developed a culture of trust and empowerment on all of my teams.- I excel in cross-functional roles where I can work across multiple areas of the business. I’m adept at picking up new challenges and learning quickly. Please reach out if you’re interested in chatting climate, product or anything else! Other topics I’d be happy to talk about include:- Hiking/camping/canoeing- Traveling- Food/coffee/cooking- A book (or multiple books) you read recently that you want to recommend and/or unpack- Podcasts!- Photography- Reimagining how our relationship with nature, capitalism, and each other could change as we move forward into our uncertain shared future

Android Developer And Product InternScribd Aug 2014 - Dec 2014San Francisco Bay AreaActed as both the project lead for usability studies aimed at improving the Scribd website and apps’ UI and UX and as an android developer. Suggestions from usability studies were used to improve the app and websiteThe studies were done by conducting user tests which involved developing a set of tasks that Scribd users performed both in person and using usertesting.com as well as through interviewing Scribd's most prolific users in order to obtain qualitative usability data that could help all usersAs an android developer I developed a full feature for downloading and saving content offline, and contributed to major releases including the rollout of the audiobook feature better support for offline mode. This involved refactoring and improved the functionality, architecture and readability of numerous parts of the Android app.Evaluation:Sam got up to speed on Android super-quick and made some killer contributions in the first few months. I was even more impressed with how he took on the product manager role and jumped into some difficult tasks despite not having much structure or guidance from the rest of the team, figuring things out for himself as he went- Jared Friedman, Scribd Co-Founder and Former CTO -
Android DeveloperBridgit Jan 2014 - May 2014Waterloo OntarioI took Bridgit’s Android app from not functional to release ready by re-writing and/or refactoring the majority of the Android code base. Through this process I gained a much more thorough understanding of the Android OS and development environment by taking the time to research and evaluate the many options available to Android developers. This attention to detail came from a focus on building a well-written, architecturally sound and efficient code base that could easily be understood and scaled.Because I was working solo I got to work as a designer, developer and product manager. This meant contributing to app redesigns, getting creative control over the look of the Android app (it had to follow previously defined design specs, but there was a fair amount of freedom with those bounds), and setting my own project priorities, goals and specific deadlines (larger deadlines were assigned based on discussions with the company's founders in order to coincide with business goals)Overall Bridgit gave me the opportunity to make a large impact on a small start-up.Evaluation: Sam is an extremely hard worker and brought a positive energy to the team. He is always ready to take on new challenges and his flexibility allows him to work successfully with any team, and in many variations of a technical role. Sam is a strong communicator, especially when it involves cross-functional teams, and will be successful in any new opportunity he decides to take on.- Mallorie Brodie, Bridgit Co-Founder -
