I am passionate about data science and machine learning, with a special interest in bridging the gap between technological innovation and ethical compliance. As an aspiring data scientist, my goal is to ensure that technological advancements are developed and implemented responsibly. I am committed to building my technical skills while learning how to effectively apply them to responsible development standards.Here’s how my experiences have shaped my passion: I participated in the CIFAR-OSMO AI4Good Lab program, where my team developed PlatePal, a reinforcement learning system optimizing grocery runs, winning the Accelerator Award for extended funding and mentorship. As we developed PlatePal, we consulted policy and ethics specialists to guide our product’s risk assessments and responsible development.As an AI Strategy and Compliance Assistant with Nautical Crime Investigation Services (NCIS), I examine ML algorithm features for risk assessment, contribute to technical documentation, facilitate industry-academia partnerships, and lead an AI-ethics intern interest group.As a data science research fellow with the Data Sciences Institute at UBC, I am working on a project sponsored by the Investigative Journalism Foundation (IJF) to apply NLP methods for improving the navigation of Canada’s largest corpus of publicly available government documents. Our goal is to enhance the accessibility and interpretability of investigative journalism.
