About Sandeep Kumar (Ph.D.)

Currently, I am working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate (RA) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, India. I am working on the project "Development of Digital Twin for centrifugal pump and system, pipelines providing seawater supply to main propulsion plant on board Naval Platform."I successfully defended my doctoral work titled "Experimental investigation of the formation and mitigation of vortex rope in elbow draft tube" on May 15, 2024. The work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Bhupendra K. Gandhi at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Roorkee, India. I am working in experimental fluid mechanics, particularly hydrodynamic machines. My Ph.D. research was focused on forming and mitigating vortex rope in the draft tube of a Francis turbine at part-load operations.I developed a small turbine test rig to investigate the draft tube's flow instabilities at the turbine's off-design operation under the National Perspective Plan on R&D of the Ministry of Power, GoI. The main objective is to employ it to study the flow field, the formation of RVR, and its mitigation using fluid injection methods. The small turbine test rig incorporates the fluid injection method to minimize the pressure pulsation vibrations of hydro-turbines during the high and part load demand operations. This may help increase the turbine's lifetime and performance at part load operations. Recently, Two patents have been filed for my work.Previously, I worked as a research associate in the MIED department of IIT Roorkee and conducted numerous performance tests of small hydropower plants in Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand. I contributed to developing skills for on-site performance testing of hydropower plants and have expertise in evaluating in-situ hydraulic efficiency measurement using the thermodynamic method as per IEC 60041. I have also conducted the first successful thermodynamic testing of India's small hydropower plant (SHP).I design and develop Hydraulic Turbines (Francis, Pelton, Crossflow). Recent projects of the year 2022 include the design of a Francis Turbine (Spiral casing, stay vanes, guide vanes, runner, and draft tube) of 50 kW and a Crossflow turbine of 100 kW for Arunachal Pradesh Govt. projects. I have developed a single 750 kW Francis turbine and 250 kW Pelton turbine for the Leond-IV SHP project at District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India.
