Research Profile: Industrial automation is facing challenges related to manufacturing change from mass production to mass customization. Industrial automation plays an important role in today’s ever-evolving industries. The emergence of modern computers and its use in industrial automation has resulted in many improvements in the way today’s industries operate. In the initial days, industrial automation was used only for cost reduction and as a means to increase productivity. However, of late, the focus has been shifting to quality assurance, flexibility, reconfigurability, and re-usability. With the ever-growing advancement in embedded systems and technology, the control of industrial automation systems has gradually evolved from one that is centralized to a module-based decentralized design. We call these decentralized systems as Component-Based Industrial Automation Systems (CBAS). My research direction is in the area of software for CBAS. Pedagogical ideology: My main ideology with teaching is “learn by doing”. The focus is on the practical exercises and practical application of the theory being thought in the lectures. One way to achieve this is to use flipped classrooms, and the other way to do this is to do first theory and then practical demos in each lecture slot. I have used the later method efficiently in the courses I teach. To achieve this, I start with a use case and a problem. The use case is almost always a real-world use case. Using heavily interactive lectures we (me and students) first learn the theory, the effects and what are the solutions. We end with why we should use these solutions. Currently, the lectures end with a lecture quiz that is a take-home exercise. But, in the future, I intend to make in-lecture quizzes with real-time feedback. This is possible due to digital tools now available
