About Sander Hunink

Knowledge is like a forest; at first there is nothing but a bare plain, but soon outlines become visible and a structure develops that slowly transforms the bare into a cycle of words. Trees rise up majestically from the ground, like books in a bookcase, they make up the scene of the landscape around you. And on the ground, deliciously fragrant forest herbs grow, where thoughts graze amidst wandering daydreams. It is here that you develop knowledge. Each tree stands for a different subject or theme about which you have gained knowledge. Thus a forest is soon created in which you can see the forest for the trees. It is the primeval forest that I like to dwell in. And it continues to develop; as succession stages, the process never stops. Maybe it tends to go back to another part of the succession, just to experience certain things again. But just like an aging forest, certain knowledge, certain trees, will one day come to an end. This is not really the end, but the process of renewal, in which the old is remembered and the newly acquired knowledge merges into ultimate wisdom. Below is my profile, with the various experiences and trainings through which I have passed through different stages of succession. I am particularly a specialist in Dutch and European nature legislation and nature policy. My personal goal, 'my' forest, is to actively contribute to the protection of nature. Originally an ecologist, I am interested in both the ecological side and the legal side of nature conservation law and nature rights in the Netherlands and Europe. This interest also drives me to act as an intermediary between lawyers and ecologists. A niche, I have noticed, that provides a better understanding of the impact of nature conservation law on society and the protection of nature. In addition, I try to provide insight into the differences and similarities in nature policy between the competent authorities, identify bottlenecks and offer solutions and advice for a correct and consistent protection of nature. I also use this knowledge to advise clients on nature conservation law and the consequences for projects and plans. Employed by ecological consultant and project office NatuurInclusiefAdditional functions - Member of the editorial board of Tijdschrift Natuurbeschermingsrecht at Sdu Publishers (since 1 May 2018) - Member of the NDFF quality assurance committee

Soms werk ik daarbij samen met externe deskundigen waaronder andere ecologen, advocaten of juristen om te komen tot een gedegen advies. • Wageningen University And Research Centre
    Academic Teaching Assistant
Wageningen University And Research Centre Sep 2004 - Oct 2004
    Wageningen, The Netherlands
Scientific Teaching Assistant at the Department of Plant Sociology and Nature Management, working on an international scientific article about the evaluation of meadow bird management and policy in the Netherlands. The results of the evaluation showed that many meadow bird areas are not protected by planning and that a lot of subsidy money (43%!) is spent in areas that are unsuitable for meadow birds. In my spare time, I continued to work on this and published an article together with Dick Melman, Alex Schotman and Geert de Snoo in Levende Natuur (theme issue Meadowbirds) and Journal for Nature Conservation.
  • Forestry Commission
    Intern
    Forestry Commission Apr 2003 - Sep 2003
    Maashorst, The Netherlands
Internship at Staatsbosbeheer (Dutch government organization for forestry and the management of nature reserves), under supervision of Klaas van der Laan, advocate. For Staatsbosbeheer, I made an evaluation of 25 years of nature development and management by comparing the results of vegetation mapping with those of breeding birds and the management carried out. This showed that the nature area has changed noticeably from a cultural landscape with a monotonous structure to a more natural landscape with higher biodiversity and more variation in structure. I also made a chronology of the developments in the nature policy of the various landowners, who together made a vision for one joint nature area, the Maashorst.
  • Ravon Foundation
    Intern
    Ravon Foundation Jan 2003 - Apr 2003
    Nijmegen Area, Netherlands
Research into the determining water quality and chemical composition of breeding waters of the garlic toad and waters in the direct vicinity of these. Research resulted in a surprising result that the common spadefoot toad (which is very rare in the Netherlands) to be less critical towards acidity than previously assumed. Successful reproduction was observed at an acidity of 5.2 pH (Hatertse en Overasseltse vennen). Mortality of eggs of the common spadefoot toad does not only depend on acidity, but also on the presence or absence of toxic heavy metals such as aluminium and cadmium, which become more available with acidification. It is further recommended to include the degree of buffering in research in addition to acidity, as this determines whether a water is sensitive to (further) acidification and possibilities for recovery.
