About Jonathan Sander

Jonathan Sander (aka Sander) has been working in IT since 1996 and focusing on Identity and Security since 2004. Most of that time has been focused on translating ideas. Whether it’s clarifying compliance and regulations for engineers or technical architectures for executives, his focus has been simplifying the complex with analogies. It's about finding a way to make sure everyone sees everything clearly and get things moving. Programming was also a form of translation - from process to code. In the distant past, so was tutoring - translating ideas in many subjects (philosophy, history, math, physics) for fellow students who didn't quite see things clearly. If you don’t encounter him doing his duty spreading cyber-clarity far and wide, he can be found hanging around with his family or flipping through back issues at any comic shop he happens to see in his journeys. If you made it this far, then I can switch to first person! My goal is to work for and with people I respect, and have the chance to prove I'm worthy of their respect in return. It would also be nice to pay off the house and retire early, but that comes later.Specialties: Expert communication, writing, troubleshooting, documentation, people, and presentation skills. Strongest area of technology is identity & access management. I studied cognitive science as a part of my philosophy degree, and those ideas have suddenly become very relevant due to the ML/AI wave. Never really stopped reading and playing with ML stuff, but never thought it would be something that would go on a resume. Also have broad knowledge of application design & architecture, cloud & hosted infrastructures, and all of security from the technology in IT infrastructures to the people who use that technology.

  • Talon Cyber Security (By Palo Alto Networks)
    Lead Sales Engineer
Talon Cyber Security (By Palo Alto Networks) Jul 2023 - Feb 2024
Talon has created the first enterprise browser specifically designed to implement the highest levels of cybersecurity for a modern, distributed workforce while reducing complexity and cost. My role at this dynamic, fast growing company is to help show the world what that really means, and how it can help them leverage the power of our hybrid world safely.
  • Snowflake
    Security Field Cto
    Snowflake Sep 2018 - Jul 2023
    The Cloud, Us
Snowflake Computing is changing the way organizations think about their data. A large part of that is the comprehensive approach Snowflake brings to securing that data. Security has been built into every layer of the system, and it rests on the backs of the world's most secure cloud providers. My role is to ensure everyone who is involved with Snowflake - the customers, the engineers, and the partners - are all taking security as seriously as this platform has since day one. That may involve deep hands on with customers to construct unique architectures blending their current cloud, on prem systems, and Snowflake, or it may be evangelizing best practices to anyone who will listen that may be able to help Snowflake users stay secure.
  • Security Catalyst
    Strategy & Content Advisor
    Security Catalyst Apr 2014 - Aug 2021
    Raleigh, Nc, Us
Michael Santarcangelo is an expert in communication, leadership, and security. I've been helping him in two capacities: content and vendor perspective. We collaborate on content intended for security audiences. In addition to my experience and background in philosophy, I contribute an IAM perspective to our conversations. We routinely explore the meanings of words and craft effective language through interactive conversations (we should record them). Security Catalyst works with vendors and enterprises; currently expanding to some opportunities to connect vendors with security leaders. I help shape the strategy and offering by sharing my experience from the vendor perspective -- specifically as a vendor interested in contributing value to the industry and individual conversations. Ideally, this improves the marketability and opportunity for vendors to underwrite and sponsor Security Catalyst programming and events.
  • Stealthbits Technologies
Member Of The Board Of Advisors
    Stealthbits Technologies Sep 2018 - Nov 2020
    Irvine, California, Us
The growth and change at STEALTHbits has been amazing and I'll be helping the executive team continue that momentum in this new position. I will work closely with the executive team on strategic projects, and advise on corporate development matters.
  • Stealthbits Technologies
    Cto
    Stealthbits Technologies Mar 2017 - Sep 2018
    Irvine, California, Us
I'm returning to STEALTHbits to take on the CTO role. The focus will be twofold. First, we will be taking this large portfolio of technology and stirring the pot organically to offer new and innovative solutions for challenging security problems. With new security threats emerging every day, there is a lot of room to grow there. Second, there is a strong desire to increase the amount of technology we have. That's going to mean bringing in both new talent and new technology for the team. Of course, I'll be doing my evangelism thing as well. It's not like they could stop me from talking about how cool all the stuff we'll be doing is even if they tried.
  • Lieberman Software
    Vp Of Product Strategy
    Lieberman Software Aug 2015 - Mar 2017
There are several roles I'm going to play at Lieberman. I will join our CEO as a spokesperson for the company. We're going to shift the whole PIM market to proactive cyber defense behind the firewall. I'll be building teams to do product management, content creation, and evangelism.
  • Stealthbits Technologies
    Strategy & Research Officer
    Stealthbits Technologies Dec 2013 - Jul 2015
    Irvine, California, Us
I'll be wearing a lot of hats in this small, dynamic company. My main focus is to act as evangelist for STEALTHbits in every forum from customer meetings to conference stages. While I do that evangelism I'll get as much input as possible from customers, analysts, and other corners of the market. Then the task, as always, will be to integrate and translate those inputs into something actionable. Those actions will lead to advancements in the products, better service for our customers, and more fruitful relationships with our partners.
  • Quest Software
    Director Of Iam Product Strategy
    Quest Software Jul 2008 - Dec 2013
    Aliso Viejo, Ca, Us
Security being my first love in the enterprise IT space, I was very happy to be back in that game by taking this role. As the Director of IAM Product Strategy, I worked with technology, consulting and delivery partners as well as with Quest's own sales channels to create and execute programs to grow the IAM business. I also did research to help guide clients, internal R&D, marketing and executives though the IAM and Security markets. This included tracking technologies such as directories, meta-directories, virtual directories, SSO platforms, federation, provisioning, automated user management, self service workflow, two factor and strong authentication, access management and auditing. I routinely worked with our field teams to assist with one on one customer meetings, conferences, workshops, papers and other materials.
  • Quest Software
    Monitoring Solution Architects Manager
    Quest Software Dec 2006 - Jul 2008
    Aliso Viejo, Ca, Us
This was a player/coach role on a team of senior consultants working with our most complex customer needs pertaining to Quest's monitoring tools. Quest's suite has evolved considerably, and now it takes the experience and expertise of senior architects to make sure our sales force and field engineers are offering each client exactly what they need. Steering the process from start of the sales cycle through the end of deployment, Monitoring Solution Architects are meant to offer vision to clients and aid to sales and engineering. They are also to be heavily involved with product management and R&D to make sure we stay true to the needs in the field and the solutions that have been put in place.I advanced to this position as of December 2006, having worked as a staff systems consultant, senior systems consultant, development consultant, consulting architect and global team tech lead respectively.
  • Quest Software
    Global Team Technical Lead
    Quest Software Oct 2003 - Dec 2006
    Aliso Viejo, Ca, Us
We had a team across the sales, marketing, engineering, and support functions that covered the 10 largest accounts for the company globally. We focused on expansion and customer success. My role was to lead and coordinate all the technical efforts for all the database, application performance management, and security solutions for these accounts. Sometimes that meant months long projects with lots of hands on, and sometimes it was a single presentation to move an opportunity forward. To date, this was the tightest, most coordinated team I had ever been on. We traveled the world, and worked to build some amazing things.
  • Quest Software
Systems Consultant - Database Replication And Application Performance Management
    Quest Software May 1999 - Sep 2003
    Aliso Viejo, Ca, Us
The first years at Quest were amazing fast paced. We were all asked to take on new technologies again and again as the company made fast paced innovations and acquisitions. Everyone on the team had to go from introduction to mastery at a break neck pace. For anyone who loves to learn (like me), it was awesome.
  • Platinum Technology
    Staff Systems Consultant
    Platinum Technology Mar 1998 - May 1999
    Norwest, Nsw, Au
This was my first position in consulting. Platinum educated me in the ways of a consultant, how sales works and how pleasing clients in large technology settings is not that different from pleasing them at parties or pools (see below). I wish I could say that I did wonderful things there, but Platinum was bought by CA about three months after I really got to start having an impact in my job. I did have the chance to excel as a security consultant for those months, working with large companies to apply Platinum's security software (OEMed from Memco).
  • The National Kidney Foundation
    Systems Admin And Webmaster
The National Kidney Foundation Mar 1997 - Feb 1998
    New York, Ny, Us
I loved this job. I was one of only two technical staffers at the national branch of this large non-profit organization. The responsibilities ranged from PC maintenance to creation and upkeep of the website. All authority for the technical aspects of these tasks were left to my discretion so long as they stayed within the very restrictive budget. Working in a way that created opportunities for people in need to help themselves and each other was very fulfilling.
  • Net2Phone
    Technical Support Representative
    Net2Phone Sep 1996 - Jan 1997
    Newark, Nj, Us
This was my first job in a technical capacity. It was also the first time I learned to help people break down problems into manageable parts in order to solve them more easily. The atmosphere was not good, though; and opportunities for advancement seemed little to none. When I started the job I had very little computer knowledge, but through a few knowledgeable coworkers and access to Windows and Unix systems I learned a great deal while sitting on the phone talking people through their simple technical glitches.
  • Balducci'S
    Party Manager And Host
    Balducci'S Mar 1995 - May 1996
    Us
During the last year of my degree, I took a job working in the office and hosting parties for Balducci's catering. Here I learned lessons about customer service that have stayed with me until today. I was responsible for the booking, arranging and hosting of parties that sometimes had price tags into six figures. My primary job was to keep the client happy regardless of how well the party was going.
  • Various Pools, Parties, & Post Offices
Lifeguard, Waiter, Sorter, Deliverer, & More
Various Pools, Parties, & Post Offices Jun 1988 - Apr 1996
I've been working full time almost constantly since I was 14 years old - sometimes achieving that by having several part time jobs at once. I certified a year early to become a lifeguard (it's hard to check a 15 year old's ID to see if they're 16) because the money was good and we needed it. I took odd jobs, waited at parties through services, and even did a few years at the campus post office during college. This is a place holder for all the lessons I learned in those years - the value of hard work, paying dues, and how to be a part of an ever changing team.
