University Of North Carolina At Wilmington May 2017 - Feb 2018
    Wilmington, Nc
I was in this position for a relatively short, but intensely productive period. We were responsible for overseeing the interests of the college’s 25 departments and programs in graduate student financial aid, faculty research, and infrastructure. My duties included those generally associated with an Executive Assistant: I maintained an Outlook calendar for the Associate Dean, worked to facilitate communication between him, faculty, graduate students, and other administrators, and arranged his travel and reimbursements. In addition, I:• helped coordinate faculty committees responsible for awarding in-house research grants• served as staff representative to a faculty committee in charge of planning and promoting a quarterly invited-speaker event for the public• oversaw surplus property submissions and physical plant work order requests• assisted with an annual computer inventory• maintained a matrix of rooms, and approved requests for their use• served as the key controller• reallocated stored equipment and furniture• assisted with new furniture acquisition, including frequent communication with furniture vendors, movers, and installers• maintained a project tracking spreadsheet for all furniture and renovation projects in the college• maintained a master spreadsheet to track money earmarked for graduate tuition remission and scholarships• performed periodic audits of graduate financial aid awards to confirm student eligibility. This position required a high level of flexibility, a penchant for on-the-spot troubleshooting, and an ability to cultivate and maintain productive working relationships with many different types of people. I thrived in my brief time at UNCW and very much hope that my next position will pose similar opportunities and challenges.
  • Florida Department Of Agriculture And Consumer Services, Division Of Plant Industry
    Biological Scientist
Florida Department Of Agriculture And Consumer Services, Division Of Plant Industry Jan 2012 - Jan 2017
    Winter Haven, Fl
I managed a disease testing laboratory and supervised a lab staff of three in the Bureau of Citrus Budwood Registration. The lab was responsible for testing citrus trees for viral, viroid, and bacterial diseases, processing around 8000 trees, and running 45-50,000 RT-PCR reactions annually. I maintained an Access database with plant sample and test information, prepared written lab procedures, made purchasing decisions for equipment and consumables, and maintained purchasing records. I contributed to grant and budget writing, prepared quarterly and annual reports, and was involved in interviewing and hiring for other positions in the bureau. I also provided backup and routine administrative assistance to my supervisor.
  • Florida Department Of Agriculture And Consumer Services, Division Of Food Safety
    Biological Scientist
Florida Department Of Agriculture And Consumer Services, Division Of Food Safety Jul 2010 - Jan 2012
    Winter Haven, Fl
I managed a testing laboratory and supervised 2 lab technicians. We performed laboratory tests on farm and processor dairy samples, including microbiological culture, microscopic examination, cryoscopy, and fluorometry. I attended a one-week State Milk Laboratory Evaluation Officers Workshop administered by the FDA, and am well-versed in the importance of records maintenance and QC procedures. I worked with industry laboratories and state inspectors to implement FDA-approved milk handling procedures and ensure the safety of Florida's dairy supply.
  • Duke University, Department Of Biology
    Associate In Research
Duke University, Department Of Biology Jan 2006 - Jun 2010
    Durham, Nc
Note: I also held this position, with a slightly different title, from October of 1996 to August of 2003.I managed a laboratory of 6-8 researchers (undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral associates and visiting scholars), focused on laboratory-based analysis of genetic variation in bryophytes. In pursuit of the interests of the Principal Investigator, I designed microsatellite primers from enriched libraries of Sphagnum and liverwort clones, and performed extensive analyses of species- and population-level genetic variation using high-throughput genotyping and DNA sequencing. I drew equal pleasure from my other primary job duty: in more than 11 total years in the Shaw Lab, I trained over 20 students and researchers in molecular laboratory techniques. I've drawn great satisfaction from seeing these folks apply their skills in both budding and established careers. In my capacity as lab manager I was responsible for purchasing materials and maintaining laboratory stocks for use by lab group, and assisted with the preparation of publications and grant proposals. I submitted thousands of published sequences to Genbank, prepared written lab procedures, made purchasing decisions for equipment and consumables and maintained all purchasing records. I also maintained a chemical inventory and managed waste disposal in accordance with state and university regulations. I worked closely with technicians and PIs from other labs to maintain communal equipment and improve areas of shared interest.

I managed the daily needs of this laboratory of 4-6 researchers (undergraduates, graduate students, technicians), and performed laboratory-based analyses of ecological and population genetic variation in Arabidopsis thaliana, and Ipomopsis spp. I designed microsatellite primers from an enriched library of Ipomopsis clones, and performed QTL and LD mapping using microsatellites, DNA sequencing and SNPs. I also maintained and operated a communally-supported ABI 3100 automated sequencer.

In addition to the duties described for this position above (i.e. for the 2006-2010 employment period), I set up this laboratory from scratch, for the newly-hired Principal Investigator. This included purchasing all materials and installing all equipment needed for the pursuit of laboratory work on behalf of the PI and by his new graduate students and post-doc.
