After spending over 21 years in law enforcement, I've transitioned into consulting work in all things domestic violence-related. Training law enforcement and other systems professionals in the subtle nuances of DV and how those dynamics impact victim response to abuse is critical to improving our advocacy for victims and ensuring best practices occur throughout the criminal and civil processes. Expert testimony during criminal trials and domestic relations proceedings is also important. Explaining counterintuitive victim behaviors to juries, court officials and other professionals helps advocate for victims/survivors in every arena. I began testifying as an expert witness in DV trials in 2015 and feel inspired and invigorated by providing lay people with insights regarding offender tactics and how victims/survivors mitigate those circumstances for their own survival.

Domestic Violence InvestigatorBoulder County District Attorney'S Office, 20Th Judicial District Nov 2020 - Jul 2024After serving as a detective in the Domestic Violence Unit at the Longmont PD for ten years, I accepted an exciting, innovative position as an Investigator at the Boulder County (CO) District Attorney's Office, 20th Judicial District. I am assigned to the newly-created Domestic Violence Acute Response Team (DV ART) and work with two fantastic prosecutors. Our unit is designed to enhance victim safety and assess cases for lethality risks and establish immediate contact with victims, all within 48 hours of the abuser's arrest. During our conversations with DV victims, we answer questions about the process, offer confidential community-based services, obtain additional relationship background information and discuss safety. Since approximately 80 to 85 percent of all DV victims will recant sometime during the prosecution process, it is vital to meet victims as early as possible. Additionally, DV ART conducts training throughout Boulder County and participates in the Boulder County DV Task Force. We coach and mentor line level officers and assist with investigative strategies throughout the process to facilitate thorough and effective outcomes with particularly complicated cases. Many of my current duties are similar to those within the Longmont PD DV Unit, only on a countywide basis. Overall, I appreciate building relationships with victims of DV and other professionals and working for justice. I feel so fortunate that I was able to keep my seat on the CO Domestic Violence Offender Management Board and as an instructor with the CO Ending Violence Against Women project. I still testify as an expert witness in DV trials and love teaching others about DV stalking, offender tactics, victim response, interview skills, investigative strategies, safety planning and how to figure out what victims are not telling us. Overall, I am forever uplifted and inspired by the courageous people I meet and am honored to share a part of their journeys.

Domestic Violence DetectiveLongmont Police Department (Co) Nov 2010 - Nov 2020As a member of the Domestic Violence (DV) Unit, I investigate complex DV cases requiring expert victim interaction/interview skills and an in-depth knowledge of offender tactics and victim behaviors. Besides investigating DV crimes and managing a case load, I work extensively with victims to ensure they have access to all services, understand the legal process and keep them engaged for the duration of the case. In addition to the law enforcement portion of my position, I also testify as an expert witness in DV and teach dynamics of DV, investigative tactics, victim behavior, etc to a wide variety of audiences, including university classes, law enforcement peers/agencies, school officials and community organizations. I thoroughly enjoy public speaking and embrace all opportunities to foster a greater community understanding of DV and its impact on our society.

School Resource OfficerLongmont Police Department Jun 2007 - Nov 2010As a school resource officer (SRO) I was assigned to two high-risk middle schools. Within that assignment, I was essentially an informal member of the administrative team and helped school officials problem solve, investigate/manage criminal activity within the school and determine best disciplinary practices for optimal outcomes. In addition, I assisted with school safety, staff and parent education relating to adolescent safety issues and presented lectures/seminars to students and staff. As a law enforcement officer working in the educational environment, I also learned to navigate the complexities surrounding school policies, the law, parental expectations and community resources designed to ensure student success and family support. Most importantly of all, I developed rapport with the students and had the opportunity to know them as people and impact their lives. In that role, I was able to build relationships with students, staff and parents to better ensure positive experiences for all of us!
