Malawi

I worked with UNDP Malawi to develop a range of Covid-19 social media marketing innovations. These included social media posts, posters, and a web-based Covid quiz app. All of these innovations were translated into three local languages and all reflected a high degree of contextualization.We had an extremely tight deadline which saw us working very long days to complete the contract on time which we did. All of our designs used local Chitenje motifs and colour palettes as well as our own four child characters from the Stay Safe Malawi products. In addition to this I produced around 100 of my own Malawi style motifs and fabric designs. I like to use a technique called the MAFA technique or the "Most Average Facial Appearance" technique. This is scientific method a skilled artist can apply to producing an average facial look by creating a composite of many local faces. This has proven to be very helpful in my design work.

I was engaged as a consultant on an animation project for IFRCs Smart Climate Disaster Law program. My consultation included input of the script, a number of technical aspects and quality control. I liaised directly with the project manager feeding back to the artist and animation team.This animation was translated into 9 languages in total.

Malawi

Health Songs International was awarded a contract to research the learning pathways of Malawi children both in and out of school, and design learning materials to help them understand the principles of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and how to change their behaviour in order to mitigate the risk posed by Earthquakes, Storms, Floods and Droughts.I was part of an advanced research team along with an educationist and we conducted a series of focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs). The result indicated that if singing, dancing and performing dramas were including as part of the lessons, then the children would enjoy the learning experience more and thus remember the important messages longer. The children also indicated that they were afraid and felt helpless as they didn't know what to do either before, during or after a disaster event. Our job was develop materials that would inform them and thus empower them to be action focused in developing new strategies to mitigate the risk from the frequent disasters that befall Malawi communities.From the findings we developed a Board Game and a set of Flashcards as well as a song to inform children about floodwater danger. We made the board game out of PVC banner material as this material is cheaper and more durable than the traditional cardboard used for board games and also much lighter making it cheaper and easier to transport. The game consisted of 24 highly illustrated segments each dealing with a specific hazard in its, Before, During or After state. We replaced the dice with a printed wheel we called the "Dice Wheel". This was because we didn't want the game to be rendered useless if the dice was lost. The children therefor throw a pebble or small stone onto the dice wheel which determines how many space they should move forward on the board game and also what manner they will present the information on the new segment they land on.

Fiji

I designed and illustrated a range of learning materials to help children and their families understand the importance Climate Change Adaptation. The innovations included an actions-based card game where the players would have to present important Climate Change Adaptation information through dance, drama, mime and even attempting to spell out key words using their bodies as letters. This sort of game is ideal for Fijian children who love to entertain their friends and families. One of the other innovations I created was a series of comic strips which appeared in the Fijian national newspaper, the Fijian Times. This series presented a range of health and safety messages in a humorous manner. See the link below.
