Take a walk down the streets of a market in most large African Urban Centers. Chances are you will stumble on someone selling antibiotics or some other medication, unregulated, in the sun, often expired. The risks are enormous and yet, medication is so critical to people’s lives and that of their loved ones, that they will often ignore these risks.This is why just cracking down on these marketplaces is not the answer. The answer resides in concerted efforts towards centralized regulation and international collaboration. Efforts that support people in their basic need to keep their families healthy, yet also ensure this is done in a safe and reproducible way.After starting my career in research and drug regulatory affairs, I chose to supplement my experience with business and management studies. I wanted to make sure I understood how to create, support and grow infrastructures that could make this ambition of drugs and food safety and efficacy a reality.Drugs and food management. Drugs and food regulation. Chemicals regulation management. All of it is really about people. It is about keeping people safe.
