Sandra I. Kay, Edd Work Experience Details
  • Self-Employed
    Instructional Strategist, Independent Scholar
    Self-Employed Jul 2014 - Present
    Greater New York City Area
My life's work has centered on the work that was done as a Visiting Scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University thanks to A. Harry Passow who created the position so we could continue to work on a developmental theory of creativity in children. It was at these Creativity seminars with A.J. Tannenbaum, Moe Stein, and Howie Gruber as our core membership that inspired my notion of elegant problems and guided my work as a district coordinator/teacher of gifted/talented programs. Inspired by their support and excitement for my investigations, I continued as a scholar/practioner forever triangulating theory with classroom realities. Some examples of my writing can be found on the website: elegant problem.com
  • Sandy Kay Productions
    Producer Of Educational Documentary
Sandy Kay Productions Oct 2010 - Present
    Greater New York City Area
"Engaging the Imagination: Wally's Way" is one of those projects your heart compels you to do. It is a documentary about "making a heart connection with art" taught by a master art educator, and originally designed for 3rd graders. This grass roots effort was filmed at a beautiful art door sculpture museum with the hopes that it will bring Wally's magic into homes, hospitals and schools for all to reap the benefits of one of Wally's tours using your own imagination. I also see its power as a catalyst for enhancing empathy and helping audiences actively participate as creative viewers. The website: www.wallyswayfilm.com provides more on this amazing collaboration.
  • The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc.
    Author
The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc. 2009 - Present
    Multiple Locations
My decades of research on talent development and expertise conducted while teaching in K-12 settings identified the need for and development of Talent Profiles that capture a cumulative record of behaviors and achievements witnessed throughout a child's development to be used to help students cultivate their curiosity and wonder throughout their schooling by helping them indentify and cultivate the areas of interest they wish to develop along the continuum of expertise. Multiple requests for a book from administrators, teachers and parents led to the publication of "On human potential: Nurtuting talents and cultivating expertise" in March 2019. I am honored by all for the wonderful praise that accompanies the text from scholars and practitioners I greatly respect for their contributions. Encouragement to complete a book on my Elegant Problems and instructional design is promised once the film is completed.
  • Naeaseattle
    2011 National Convention Program Coordinator
    Naeaseattle 2010 - 2011
    Seattle, Washington
The goal of this invited advisory position was to bring in an interdisciplinary approach to the President's theme: 'Creativity, Imagination and Innovation in Art Education'. To that end, keynotes and super sessions were designed to address the theme as well as bring multiple perspectives from other fields as requested by the board. The new research of Robert Root-Bernstein on the roles that early visual arts training plays on later scientific advances and the creativity research in neuroscience by Rex Jung added two prongs of support from science. The creation of a "Young Innovators Panel" to end the keynotes was established to inspire teachers to new ways they might assist the futures of their students. Wherever possible, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary perspectives were provided. The implementation of a 'Film Salon' providing attendees with new films or members' instructional or inspirational favorites premiered here as well.
