I am an adult who started learning classical piano in the fall of 2013 at the age of 52 with no prior music education. I thought it would be a just a hobby or a pastime but it has become a passion for me. I have taken Conservatory Canada practical piano exams for levels 1,2, 4 and 6 with the latest one completed in June 2024. I have taken my Conservatory Canada Level 5 and Level 6 music theory exams and am currently studying Level 8 Music theory exam. I have taken my Conservatory Canada Level 5 and Level 6 music theory exams and am currently studying Level 8 Music theory exam. I hope to write the Level 8 music theory exam in 2024 also. I was really interested in finding a community of adults who, like me, were learning music and were interested in giving and receiving emotional support. I looked for them at my music school’s recitals, performing arts festivals and at vocal jam sessions but I was not able to find exactly what I was looking for. Due to a precipitating incident in December 2017, I decided to create this community myself. That was how the Adults Learning Music Support Group (ALMSG) was born. And I say I created it but a more accurate statement was that I laid the foundation and the environment for such a community to grow. When I met adult music learners like me, I invited them to join the ALMSG and many did. And I also was really able to get the word out in a big way about ALMSG with my CBC first person story that was published in March 2023. We now have a really great community of pianists, a violinist, a harpist and two vocalists that reside all across Canada - AB, BC, SK, and ON and we are continuing to grow. I had always wanted to learn piano ever since I was a child but had never had the opportunity due to our family’s economic insecurity. But I now had the financial means so at the age of 52, I enrolled for my first piano lesson in Sept 2013. Fast forward to the present and I am now in my 11th year of piano studies. I completed a “mock” exam for Conservatory Canada (CC) Level 5 piano with my teacher in February 2022 and am now learning level 6. I am aiming to do an in-person level 6 practical piano exam in 2024. I have done my CC levels 1, 2 and 4 practical piano exams. I have written both my CC Music Theory Level I and Level 2 exams (for levels 5 and 6). I am currently learning Music Theory for level 4 (grade 8 level) and will be writing the examIn 2024.Another childhood dream of mine was that I had always wanted to be a singer. So I reacquainted myself with that dream and started on the road to make it a reality by acquiring a jazz vocal coach and having my first lesson with her in May 2017. Fast forward to the present and I have studied jazz vocals with four teachers. I am currently placing my voice studies on hold until I complete my piano and music theory exam in 2024. Calgary Lab Services became incorporated with the province wide lab systems and was re-named Alberta Public Labs in early 2019 under the NDP government and then changed to Alberta Precision Labs in November 2019 under the UCP government. In Aug 2020, Molecular Hematology officially became Molecular Pathology Operations South and are now in the Molecular Pathology Program which is a province wide program at Alberta Precision Labs. In Molecular Hematology, we do clinical medical diagnostic testing. We monitor engraftment in bone marrow transplant patients, and the following tests: CML t(9:22) nested PCR transcript analysis, bcr-abl major and minor transcript real time PCR Quantitation, JAK 2 testing, FLT3 testing, alpha-thalassemia, APL t(15:17) testing. Our lab test results are used by hematologists and hematopatholgists along with results from the Flow Cytometry Lab and Cytogenetics Lab to diagnose and treat patients.

In 1993, we starting working in the area of thrombosis and started developing a method to do FV Leiden testing on patients using 25 ul of whole blood and a paper was published on this method. I was the first research technologist to work for Dr. Man-Chiu Poon in his research lab at the University of Calgary. He became my mentor and is still a very good friend. I worked for 6 months on a grant and then Man-Chiu was able to get me a position of medical lab technologist with Foothills Hospital (Calgary Health Region) as they were accepting BSc degrees for RT positions at that time.

Worked on a research study of liver glucocorticoid cells with Dr. Barry Lessor, a biochemistry professor at U of C. I was hired at the beginning of June 1983 however in October, Dr. Lessor gave notice to the lab that he had decided to quit academics and become an orchard farmer. I worked 6 months for him as I found another position with Dr. Man-Chiu Poon on Dec 19, 1983.
