The Recycling & Green Battery Group is focused on developing economical recycling processes to recover critical raw materials avoiding losses in the product and material cycle to reduce its negative environmental impacts as well as geopolitical dependencies.

EarLiMetEarly stage metal recovery for energy- and resource-efficient recycling of Li-ion batteries.The project aims at developing a holistic, resource-efficient, hydrometallurgy-based recycling of valuables in Li-ion batteries up to TRL 5/6. Here, recovering all potentially valuable components of the active material, recycling the required process chemicals as well as efficient waste product conditioning are paramount. Building on these priorities, process analytics finalize the novel method. Li recovery is achieved by carbonation, utilizing CO2 as a C-source to extract bg-Li2CO3 from the black mass. Optimization of the method to be developed shall render an efficient process yielding > 95 % Li recovery from the black mass.

abonoCare The aim of project is the extraction of "green" phosphoric acid from the treatment of ashes from sewage sludge mono-combustion. This is a way of recovering the phosphorus content from residual materials that have hardly been used so far.

Lithium recycling from production residues from primary battery manufacture (LiPriBat)The project goal is to develop, optimize and scale up the process for recycling lithium-containing production residues from lithium battery manufacturing. The aim of recycling is to convert the lithium metal into a marketable product for further use.
