An orchestra librarian has many important roles to play within the structure of a symphony orchestra's organization. We not only provide all music performed by the orchestra during the course of a season, including chamber music and auditions, we also must provide information to other departments within our institutions in order for them to fulfill their project goals. We are musicians with strong performing backgrounds who understand the logistics of concert production, we are score readers who must be able to answer inquiries by our fellow musicians no matter what instrument they play, and we are researchers who must be up-to-date on current copyright laws and available performing editions. We must offer advice to that end, and work within set budgets while achieving the highest artistic standards possible. We also provide limited advice regarding legal matters concerning commissioning of new works, and grand versus small performing rights. We are required to perform gracefully under pressure, and discretion is assumed along with excellent interpersonal skills. It is a highly rewarding career path that has allowed me to use every element of my university and conservatory training. To keep that knowledge active, lifelong learning and systems thinking has helped me adapt or maintain management and tech skills with changing orchestra library job parameters.

This involved coordination between Music Director's main orchestra library in Seattle and communicating with the various artist managers representing the guest conductors. Provided music to Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra early enough to adequately prepare for rehearsals and concerts. Arranged for works still under copyright to be rented from the appropriate U.S. music publisher. Provided accurate instrumentation and stage plots for use by personnel manager and operations manager. Broke down programs after each concert and returned music to their respective sources. Followed through with subsequent invoices in order for vendors to be paid on time. This was an unsupervised position without any additional support staff. Show less

Over the course of 4.5 years I did database entry into OLIS (Orchestra Library Information System) and manipulated that data to provide repertoire reports for management and the American Symphony Orchestra League. Along with bowing and editing sheet music used for classical and pops concerts, I contributed this type of work on over 30 albums recorded by Jesus Lopez-Cobos and Erich Kunzel with Telarc Records. Much experience was acquired by observing the process we went through with new usage rights for film music, working with estates to receive permission to arrange works under copyright in order to make some of those recording projects happen. I also supported the principal librarian in her administrative duties by submitting programs to ASCAP and BMI every month and checking in and filing rental music paperwork. I was also involved in training part-time library workers which led to my developing a library employee handbook, and guiding library volunteers by keeping them focused on their project goals and developing potential for those who demonstrated interest. It was my first professional library job after college, and it was a challenging and extremely valuable work experience that led me to excel in the field of orchestra librarianship. Show less -

My instruments were soprano and tenor recorders, bassoon, bugle and bass clarinet. Show less -
