Sandra (Sandy) Washington is Director, Human Resources at United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) where she is responsible for the development and administration of a system of policies and procedures in human resource management which support UWCM’s strategic plan as well as successful employee-management within the organization. Her major responsibilities include wage/salary administration, benefits administration, staffing, placement, and training and employee relations. She functions as a generalist and consultant in all human resource matters and has demonstrated her ability to build strong relationships at all levels while addressing the day to day needs of the organization.Prior to joining UWCM in 1988, Sandy spent 15 years with Commercial Credit Company (now a part of the Citicorp organization). She began her career as a legal assistant and was promoted to Foundation Coordinator responsible for administering the company’s nationwide scholarship program and matching gifts program. She was later promoted to Public Affairs Coordinator and was responsible for promoting a positive company image through social concerns involvement with disadvantaged youth, new job development, inner city schools and civic agencies. In this capacity she also had the challenge of planning and implementing a strategy for the organizations nationwide United Way employee campaign. During her tenure she raised participation from 20% to 88%. Her final promotion at Commercial Credit was as a Personnel Administrator for one of the organizations subsidiaries, American Credit Indemnity Company. This began her long career in Human Resources.Sandy is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management where she participated in a competency model study and the Chesapeake Human Resource Association. She is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources through the HR Certification Institute.
