I believe that science and research are the key to improve our lives, and the world we live in, and decided to dedicate my career to increase the impact of academic research in society, by facilitating the dialogue and cooperation between researchers and industry. I have a large experience as a researcher, both in academia and in a biotechnology company. After my undergraduate studies in Microbiology and Genetics in the University of Lisbon, I have moved to France where I've obtained a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Paris XI University. I have worked as a researcher in Institut Curie (France), Imperial College (UK), CRCM-Marseille (France) and Hybrigenics (France), a biotechnology company. As a researcher, my work focused in the molecular aspects of intracellular signaling and protein-protein networks in cancer related cell models.This dual experience in research institutes and a biotechnology company inclined me to make a career move into technology transfer. I have started this new path in 2007, and I have since acquired experience in this area at the Technology Transfer Department of Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, IRD, France, and CIBIO-InBIO/BIOPOLIS, Portugal. I've been in charge of all aspects concerning IP protection of laboratory results, their promotion into the industry and the negotiation of licensing deals, as well as promoting and facilitating connections for research collaborations and services provisions with business corporations and the public administration. Since October 2014, I'm developing these activities at INESC-ID, in Lisbon, Portugal.I'm a passionate of this type of role and advocate for its importance in R&D organizations. That is why I contribute as a volunteer in professional associations and networks, both in Portugal (PIC - Plataforma de Interface à Ciência - https://sites.google.com/view/pic-pt/a-pic/sobre) and at the European level (ASTP - https://www.astp4kt.eu/), and why I'm also contributing to the training of students seeking academic qualifications in the area of knowledge transfer, as an invited lecturer in the advanced degree in "Science and Technology Policy and Management" at NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (https://gestaociencia.pt/).
