Karma Kayak is a resort on the small island of Gili Trawangan, near Lombok in Indonesia. As a manager I was responsible for te overall daily running of the lodge, training and supervising local staff (20 persons), bookings and communication with guests, financial management, stock management, hospitality, overseeing maintenance, housekeeping and guest services.

Main activities: organisation of workshops, seminars and lobbying activities focusing on the relationship between healthy ecosystems and human well-being for partners of IUCN NL, including governmental bodies, NGOs and businesses with the aim to integrate ecological principles and sustainable use of natural resources into the Dutch international policies.

Main activities: Development and execution of a research expedition focusing on edge effects, exploring opportunities for the management of bufferzones around Ranomafana National Park. This was an expedition in a very remote area, working at night in very difficult terrain. I trained a local team and functioned as team leader.

Main activities: Capture and translocation of various ungulates (using bomas, netgunning, free-darting), reserve management, ecological data collection and analysis, consultancy and wildlife population assessments.

Main activities: Research on the nutritional requirements of roan antelope and their role in the savannah ecosystem, with the aim to advise the management of Marakele Park Pty Ltd on the implementation of an effective breeding programme. Training and supervising a local research team, collaboration with land owners and reserve managers, daily park management including wildlife capture and translocation and ecological assessments.

Main activities: PhD assistant in a research focusing on the role of ‘frugivorous’ vertebrates in the population dynamics and regeneration of timber species, identifying options for sustainable logging. Responsible for training and coaching student volunteers and their data collection in a very remote area.
