Oct 2020 - Present

Scientific Assistant

Maccarese

As a Scientific Assistant at the Secretariat of the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR) I am responsible for the coordination of the European Evaluation Network (EVA).EVA is a Germany-funded project to enhance our knowledge about European crop accessions available in European genebanks and make genotypic and phenotypic data available via the EURISCO database. I was also involved in the GenRes Bridge project funded through EU Horizon2020: www.genresbridge.eu

Nov 2019 - Oct 2020

Standard Setting Associate At Ippc

Fao

Rome Area, Italy

As a Standard Setting Associate at the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) I worked with the experts of the Technical Panel for the Glossary (TPG) and the Technical Panel on Diagnostic Protocols (TPDP) on the development of high quality science-based International Standards on Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM). I organized and coordinated international meetings and was responsible for the preparation and timely submission of documents in the standard setting process.

Jan 2018 - Nov 2019

Postdoctoral Scientist

Wageningen

At KeyGene I worked in the biotic stress group, applying my expertise in plant-pathogen interaction to the design, implementation and analysis of various pathogen assays in diverse crop plants. I used next generation sequencing techniques (Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) to study the genomes and transcriptomes of crop plants in order to identify genes important in resistance to pathogens and develop molecular markers for use in breeding. I applied Python and R programing languages in data management of high throughput sequencing and phenotyping datasets.I developed proposals for internal research and business development and communicated with international shareholders on project progress.

Jul 2014 - Jun 2017

Visiting Researcher

Cals @ Snu

During my stay at SNU I worked on a collaborative project in the group of Prof. Byoungcheorl Kang, studying biotic stresses in pepper. I managed phenotypic assays, developed molecular markers and performed high throughput data analysis. I mentored graduate students and was involved in publication of two manuscripts.

Oct 2014 - Feb 2016

Research Specialist

Research activities included investigating the molecular mechanisms of Arabidopsis resistance to the oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis. I worked on characterizing in depth the mechanisms of effector recognition by the cognate resistance protein, by studying sub-cellular localization of resistance proteins and isolating and characterizing functional orthologs from different accessions. These projects involved a combination of molecular techniques, biochemical characterizations and bioinformatics analyses.Within these projects I supervised and mentored graduate and undergraduate students, wrote and reviewed grant proposals, reports and publications.

Sep 2012 - Jun 2014

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Berkeley, Ca, Usa

My research aimed at gaining a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying plant immunity in the interaction of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana with its natural oomycete pathogen Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis. One project involved screening 90 Arabidopsis ecotypes with more than 20 putative effector proteins and resulted in the identification and cloning of a novel functional resistance gene. I established the Arabidopsis/Hyaloperonospora pathosystem, and implemented a phenotyping screen looking for resistance responses. I used a mix of map-based cloning and targeted sequencing to identify a novel functional resistance gene. I was involved in writing of project and grant proposals and reports on granted projects to funding agencies. I wrote and peer-reviewed scientific publications and presented at international meetings.I received a post-doctoral fellowship and was involved in obtaining NSF funding for our work on Hyaloperonospora. I co-taught a lecture course on "Plants, society and agriculture", covering topics such as plant biology, genetics, breeding technologies, future challenges in population and agriculture (together with Dr. David Zilberman) and was a guest lecturer in the course "Plant-Microbe interactions" (with Dr. Shauna Somerville)
