Disparities in outcomes for Māori and Pacific people with heart failure are stark, with significantly high hospitalisation, readmission and mortality rates. Heart failure is a chronic syndrome where successful management involves effective communication between patients/whānau and their healthcare providers, as well as coordinated care across providers and systems. While discharge planning is a crucial phase in the overall care of heart failure, there are opportunities to improve current practices. This investigation focuses on discharge planning and interface between hospital-level and community care for patients with heart failure, including programmes or interventions that specifically address equity for Māori and Pacific patients/whānau. I am a Research Fellow for the Manawataki Fatu Fatu ACCESS programme (Accessing Cardiovascular Care of Equities StudieS), in the Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care, School of Population Health. Funded by The Heart Foundation and Healthier Lives, National Science Challenge, the three-year study is the first major programme of its kind in Aotearoa New Zealand. It aims to improve access to healthcare for Māori and Pacific people, which has the potential to achieve equity in heart health outcomes for all New Zealanders. Our Whānau, Consumer and Clinician Digital Council is a link between the Te Whatu Ora Data and Digital Executive and clinicians, consumers, whānau, hapori and communities. Grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, the Council plays a significant role in our engagement with diverse stakeholders and working with Māori to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The Council helps shape data and digital technologies to enable improved and equitable health outcomes across Aotearoa – New Zealand.

In 2015, I co-founded DataViz My, a social-enterprise (Sdn Bhd) with the mission of advancing data literacies. DataViz My was the inaugural facilitator of the Data Science Primer Course hosted by the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) Academy. This was the first industry data science course offered in Malaysia. Through our programmes, we helped hundreds of professionals to transition into careers in the big data analytics sector. Our workshops and events were facilitated through partnerships with Malaysian government agencies, commercial and higher education providers. We helped bridge curriculum gaps in data literacies offered in higher education with our research on data skills in demand by Malaysian employers. DataViz My fostered and sustained a lively network of course instructors with a breadth of industry experience. In 2020 I returned to Aotearoa NZ with my family.

I was an organiser for Big Data Malaysia between 2012 – 2020, a networking group. I helped to grow the community to ~8,000 members with numerous meet-ups and free workshops each year. This was one of the most rewarding professional and community experiences of my career. One of the most successful events which I directed was the 2016 Wrangle conference in partnership with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDeC) and Cloudera. We attracted international speakers from North America and JPAC, with over 350 people in attendance. Big Data Malaysia is a networking group for professionals with interest in all things Big Data; including NoSQL, Hadoop, visualisation, business use cases, data science, data journalism and more. Big Data Malaysia supports the Analytics ecosystem in Malaysia by organising events that raise awareness and education around emerging technologies and applications; and in connecting talent supply with demand.

I was a Senior Analyst for Experian Hitwise, and led commissioned research for the Asia Pacific region. Experian Hitwise was Experian’s global online audience measurement and competitive intelligence service providing insights on how over 25 million internet users interact with millions of websites daily. I was an early employee of Hitwise, which was one of Australia’s most successful big data start-ups. As an industry analyst, I was regularly quoted in the mainstream press across outlets in Asia Pacific and gave numerous speaking engagements. I authored a comprehensive portfolio of industry reports and articles for trade magazines and our company’s blog, ilovedata. A highlight for me during my career at Hitwise was giving keynote presentations at marketing events hosted by Google in Hong Kong and Singapore.
