The mission of ERIBA is to better understand what causes ageing. Within ERIBA, studies are focused on the mechanisms that result in loss of cells with age and the decline in the function of old cells and tissues. ERIBA aims to develop novel strategies to prevent or combat age-related disease and to provide evidence-based recommendations for healthy ageing. PhD-thesis: Rheologic changes of hypothermic preserved red blood cells.The red blood cell rheologic properties are important determinants of the flow behavior of blood and subsequently the oxygenation of the micro-vascular environment. The aim of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of the red blood cell quality from a rheologic perspective in transfusion medicine. A better insight of the red blood cell rheologic properties during ex vivo preservation could improve transfusion outcome. Alternatively the utilization of cryopreservation for long-term storage of red blood cells was explored.
