I am an experienced Mathematics and Teaching and Learning Adviser with significant recent involvement in driving forward change in the teaching of mathematics, often in challenging circumstances. I am a clear thinker who can effectively synthesise research and policy into coherent strategic and operational planning. I have delivered success in large scale high value educational enhancement programmes, including developing a strategic approach to the delivery of Functional Skills in Mathematics. I work with colleagues to build both their own confidence in their subject knowledge and their understanding of pedagogical subject knowledge. There are many reasons why students and adults fail to achieve in mathematics and not all of these reasons are content specific. I am very interested in how we develop learner’s ability to decode complex multistep problems that they might have struggled with previously. Supporting learners who have previously been unsuccessful in mathematics is I believe about helping them to take one step at a time. Identifying the mathematics they do know so they experience success and using this increased confidence to help them tackle the mathematics they struggle with and a result finding mathematics less intimidating than they thought. It also involves presenting contexts that are real in the minds of the learner. As a first step on the ladder of success in mathematics I am very interested in how very young children learn and I have completed the NCETM Primary Professional Lead development course to further my understanding. I have also worked with Primary teachers in Shenzhen China and with a London local authority to develop a LA wide approach to problem solving in their Primary schools.
