About Sandro De Thomasis, Ph.D.

Sandro-Angelo de Thomasis, born in Montréal-Nord, Québec, now resides in Manhattan, New York. He is an Assistant Professor of Liberal Arts and Modern Languages at the Juilliard School, where he teaches French and Italian language classes, academic English for English Language Learners, literature electives such as “Dante’s Inferno” and “Dante’s Purgatorio,” and graduate translation courses.Sandro holds a B.A. in Western Society and Culture from Concordia University’s Liberal Arts College, and an M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Italian Language and Literature from Yale University. As a graduate student at Yale, he taught all levels of Italian, both on campus and in Siena, Tuscany, during summer sessions abroad. His doctoral dissertation focused on the hermeneutic method of “vertical reading” in Dante Studies, exploring texts and images in the Middle Ages. His research at Oxford University, funded by Yale’s MacMillan International Dissertation Research Fellowship, was supervised by Prof. Simon Gilson (2018–2019).Sandro co-edits, with Iuri Moscardi, the volume The Acts of the Reappearing Pheasant, a chronicle of the 2022 transatlantic poetry conference that examines contemporary poetry’s role and cross-cultural relationships. The volume features contributions from notable poets and scholars from Italy and the US, addressing aspects of poetic discourse, digital technology's impact, and the neo-avant-garde legacy.He is also on the editorial board of Those Who from Afar Look Like Flies (University of Toronto Press, forthcoming), a bilingual anthology of contemporary Italian poetry, including his translations and critical essays on Andrea Inglese, Lorenzo Durante, Antonio Riccardi, Riccardo Held, and Daniele Poletti. His publications include an essay on Durante’s Quarantore in Deconstructing the Model in 20th and 21st-Century Italian Experimental Writings (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2019), and articles in the Journal of Italian Translation, Italica, and Annali d’italianistica. Another notable forthcoming publication is his translation of selected writings of Piero Gobetti in An Intellectual Against Fascism. The Selected Writings of Piero Gobetti (University of Toronto Press), co-edited by Mimmo Cangiano, Davide Dalmas, and Marta Vicari.
