I believe that all students should be given the opportunity to explore concepts of Catholic faith, scripture, doctrine, tradition and spirituality in a safe open learning environment. I also believe that the study of religion/theology provides the student a basis of historical tradition and knowledge that will enable them to develop a living faith life. The classroom experience encompasses not only the educational but the shared experiences of coming to an understanding of material and applications to life.As a young person develops and grows in faith, there is a process of seeking a true knowledge of belief. My role as a teacher/catechist is to provide instruction in theology, assist in development of critical thinking skills and nurture the faith and spiritual development of the student. This is accomplished through a balance of knowledge and faith development experiences. I also feel that my personal witness to my faith development and application of the knowledge that I have gained encourages the student’s journey.A religion/theology teacher/catechist has been gifted a unique mission to share in the spiritual development of young people and walk with them on their journey in knowledge and faith. I believe there are components necessary for the spiritual journey of young people. Those components are community, witness to one’s own faith journey, sharing the stories of scripture, providing a safe space and support for the journey. The spiritual journey is not a path separate from the rest of life. The spiritual journey begins at conception and continues until we no longer walk this earth. I believe that God meets and walks with us where we are.
