Communications Manager
Sandy left the City of Richmond as the Acting Communications Manager reporting to the Corporate Programs group. While with the City, she worked on the Richmond Olympic Speed Skating Oval bid, and led the Canada Line Rapid Transit Project (RAV) communication and engagement from Reference Alignment to Preliminary Design where she subsequently won a national award with the Canadian Public Relations Society. Sandy was one of the City media spokespersons, and was responsible for city-wide strategic corporate communications planning and implementation. Prior to her A/Manager role, Sandy began with the City of Richmond as a Public Works Liaison/Communications Coordinator responsible for the City's Capital, Minor Capital and Transportation infrastructure projects for Engineering and Public Works. Sandy's municipal/regional/provincial public sector roles, and working with the Local Government Management Association of BC, gave rise to her specializing in strategic client, stakeholder and community relations. Sandy also won a provincial award for her work on the City's TeamWorks project implemented across British Columbia. Sandy also specialized in crisis communications with the City, Airport and Metro Vancouver EOC's, and was no stranger to effective issues management having previously come from the BC Ministry of Attorney General. After completing the program, Sandy was asked to be a speaker at the Municipal Administrator's Training Institute (MATI III), Advanced Communications for Local Government, conducted by Capilano College. Communications Co-Ordinator, Ministry Of Attorney General
Sandy held two roles while at the British Columbia Ministry of Attorney General. Sandy was originally hired as a Charging Officer Supervisor (Special Provincial Constable) for the controversial Photo Radar and Red Light Camera Program. Sandy supervised all Charging Officer's, she created policies and procedures for the new Photo Radar and Red Light Camera Program, resolved and managed issues escalated from the public through the 24/7 call centre team, processed charges under the Provincial Motor Vehicle Act and testified in court. As the Program evolved, the BC Government Public Affairs branch in Victoria, BC determined that local communications and media relations support in the Richmond, BC office was required. Sandy took on a Communications Co-ordinator role under the supervision of Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the RCMP. Peter and Sandy planned and implemented not only the media relations objectives from the BC Provincial Government, but also the objectives from the local Integrated Traffic Camera Unit led by the local Inspector. This is where Sandy focussed her career in the public, government, stakeholder and media relations industry.
Program Co-Ordinator
Sandy held an administrative co-ordinator role with the Faculty of Commerce for the Real Estate Sales, Agent, Notary Public and Mortgage Broker programs. She provided typical administrative support to educational programs, examinations, cross-faculty initiatives and events, and worked her way up to a Supervisor role prior to leaving the University for the BC Provincial Government. Solid internal and external stakeholder and client relations was a key requirement in this role, along with attention to detail and issues management. Program compliance issues were also escalated to Sandy for her resolution and management, particularly when a student was about to be suspended from their applicable program.
