I practised as a Corporate and Commercial Solicitor at Partner level for about thirty seven years and co-founded the successful niche commercial law firm of www.mbmcommercial.co.uk in 2005. I retired from MBM in 2016 but still play an active ambassadorial role for the firm.MBM is very focused on working with entrepreneurs, particularly technology entrepreneurs and early stage technology investors. MBM has been recognized by numerous awards for its work. Over the years I have had the privilege of working with many entrepreneurs and their businesses on their journey from start up to exit and have been a Non-executive Director and/or Company Secretary of a number of successful companies.I had the good fortune to introduce the two founders of www.archangelsonline.com to each other in 1992 and introduced them to many of their successful early investments, including Optos.com. Over the years they have evolved to become one of the biggest Business Angel Syndicates in the world. I also did the legal work for www.seraphimcapital.co.uk which was the UK’s first Enterprise Capital Fund and MBM has since been involved in ten Enterprise Capital Funds.I recently retired from chairing convergechallenge.com, which is the leading pan Scotland programme for University spinouts. I am currently the Board Observer for HIE on odxinnovations.com, which is an outstanding example of a University spinout, and a Director of grassmarket.org, which is a highly successful charity award winning charity working with people suffering from deep social exclusion. I am on the Advisory Board of CivTech.atlassian.net, which is an inspiring public/private collaboration to solve IT issues and I am also a Director of Scottishtecharmytecharmy.org which has been established to provide IT support to numerous public and third sector organisations. It has already made a real impact since it was established only a couple of months ago. I am on the Advisory Boards of or mentor three technology start-ups and on the Investment Committee of one Business Angel Syndicate.I was delighted to receive the first ‘Local Hero’ Award at www.eie-invest.com in 2016, I was awarded an OBE for services to entrepreneurship and voluntary activities in 2017 and I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2018.
