I had been working as an accountant for quite a few years when I started this job. As a senior accountant I was working on another level without time pressures, and lucky to be working for a great boss! I enjoyed my time there even more than I had elsewhere in previous years.Accounting work in one office is very similar in nature to the next; my work covered various industry types, from small to medium size businesses. The longer I was working in the accounting field, my increasing concern was that many small businesses do not seek outside accounting advice or assistance during the year. Many of them manage their own bookkeeping, usually seeing their accountant to prepare their tax returns only once a year. All too often, client’s have little idea of their financial position. It can often be too late to overcome a problem evolving during the year.Owners go into business only ever to succeed (failure is not an option for them) so they raise capital on their most valuable asset, their family home. We as bookkeepers of today know how to interpret the confusing world of tax, cash flow, profit & loss, balance sheets for client’s to have an easier understanding of ‘where their at’. Our goal is to empower small business, and to succeed going forth. Australia is competing within a global market. Just look at changes technology has brought; Cloud Accounting has taken over, many hundreds of apps as business aids, importance of effective social media for marketing and promoting, plus the practice of outsourcing work overseas which is becoming more common.The role of an awesome bookkeeper is more than just a bookkeeper of yesteryear. This was the driving reason for my decision to return to professional bookkeeping. I believe a dedicated bookkeeper is a low, cost effective business strategy for their business success.

My role was to prepare tax returns for all types of entities-companies, trusts, partnerships & sole traders. As a member of a small and great team, we worked collaboratively to meet financial targets. My role required taking ownership of each client’s work from start to completion, including ongoing client assistance during the year. Worked with various types of businesses, and as no two businesses are the same, your work was always interesting and at times challenging. Our work ethos was to work with and for each client, and of course it required excellent time management skills to work efficiently and effectively.My satisfying achievements involved cases with the ATO, getting the best outcome for client’s, as these often become emotional and overwhelming times for them. I got to meet some amazing business owners, and I developed an even deeper appreciation for their challenges as small business owners.Due to the variety of accounting experiences I was exposed to, my skills, knowledge, and accountability grew enormously during these years. I learned to appreciate the adding value concept, plus it was my introduction to a paperless office. It’s such a great concept, and we have adopted the practice in our own office today.

This was a fun time in my life, working for 10 years with family. I learned what it takes for a family business to successfully work together long term. Respect for each other was number one!Working in a family business enabled me to combine work, study for my Business Degree, and raising children. I took care of the bookkeeping needs of the business, reception, and whatever adhoc responsibilities that evolved; from cleaning, pool maintenance and many others. I met many people on the journey, learned the pros and cons of dealing with the public in business, and gained an enormous appreciation of what it takes to be in business. It was sold in 2007, which proved timely in my life’s journey as I married and moved to Brisbane in early 2008.

Having completed my degree this was my first accounting job, and what a steep learning curve it was! It was the most stressful and challenging time. On day one, I remember being sat at my appointed desk and told to complete a Trust Tax Return. Day two on the job I thought 'what am I doing here?'. University learning is theoretically focused, so a practical skill such as completing a tax return was not part of the curriculum. As it turned out, staying with the job for a year, it actually proved to be the best 'fasting tracking' of my career as an accountant. A year at this job gave me the knowledge and skills of tax accounting equivalent to 3 years elsewhere.

This was seen as my escape from a small country town, to see what more was out there in the wider world. Having finished school (year 12), I joined and specialised in Communications as a Morse Code Operator. As it happens, it’s a skill one does not forget, just like riding a bicycle. Although an obsolete skill of today, I found an internet site 38 years later sending morse code, and was in shock and awe that I could still efficiently read it. My challenge now is to reach 30 plus words per minute again! It was a fun time for me and my experience gave me life changing skills to move forward, many of which I still employ today; discipline, responsibility, order, teamwork, community…. and many more.
