I’m a helper by nature and have always loved the jolt of energy you get from finding a solution that makes someone else’s life a little easier. So naturally I gravitated to a career that allowed me to do just that. Being a C-Level Executive Assistant for more than 21 years gave me the opportunity to problem solve on a regular basis and taught me to always be on my on my toes and looking for possible connections that might come in handy for future challenges. And fun fact, I’ve been referred to as the office “Mary Poppins” due to my ability to come up with a quick solution or to pull an actual helpful item out of my little miscellaneous pouch I carry. Of course, solutions don’t just create themselves. I’m convinced that a large part of being successful is being organized, finding a process that works for you to keep you on track, and being able to quickly identify how to prioritize tasks that need to be done. Being in a role like mine means that at least one person is depending on you to make sure that workflow isn’t unnecessarily interrupted. An office can be consistently inconsistent and it’s my job to make sure needs are being met quickly and efficiently. I’ve found over my career it’s that inconsistency that makes my role exciting and enjoyable.I’ve also learned through my experiences that your career isn’t your only identifier. You must find meaning in your life outside of your job because things can change in the blink of an eye. Travel as much as you can (if that’s your thing), surround yourself with family and friends, or volunteer your time. On any given free day you might find me enjoying a hiking trail with my husband and our dog, reading a book in a chair under the trees at a campsite, walking around the zoo, riding a rollercoaster, or taking off on a spur of the moment road trip adventure. Life is entirely too short to not look for joy in everything you do, and if you can’t find it then you need to go out and make it happen.
