Sandy has worked in the financial services sector for over twenty years in various legal, compliance and public policy roles. Areas of expertise include consumer protection legislation, anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism financing legislation, privacy, compliance management programs, and regulations related to the payment and card industries. Sandy has extensive experience dealing with regulators including the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre.Prior to joining Alterna, Sandy was Counsel at Blakes and was Assistant General Counsel at the Canadian Bankers Association (CBA). She has also held senior level positions at various financial institutions in Canada. At the CBA Sandy was a representative for the public/private Advisory Committee on Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing and was a member of the Consumer Affairs, Corporate Governance and Financial Crime Working Groups of the International Banking Federation. She has appeared before numerous Parliamentary Committees including with respect to the 2019 federal budget bill, the 5-year review of the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act as well as the review on sales practices.
