I am from Vietnam and completed my medical training at Hanoi Medical University, the first ranked top medical university in Vietnam, in 2010. After that, I worked as a physician scientist at Hanoi Medical University on HIV/AIDS-related research before joining the Epidemiology Ph.D. Program at Vanderbilt University under the mentorship of Prof. Xiao-Ou Shu in August 2016. My first two years of graduate study between 2017 and 2018 were supported by the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Congress. My research interest is cancer epidemiology, focusing on understanding biological mechanisms related to modifiable factors, which would lead to the development of personalized preventive strategies for improving cancer prognosis. In 2019, I was awarded the Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke (VECD) Fogarty global health fellowship, which supported spending one year at the Vietnam National Cancer institute (VNCI) between 2019 and 2020 to receive training in field epidemiology and collect information for my dissertation research. As a result, I developed my Ph.D. dissertation project to assess the incidence of toxicities of chemotherapy among Vietnamese women with breast cancer and investigate the influence of gut microbiome and lifestyle factors on chemotherapy-related toxicity. My dissertation title is “Chemotherapy-induced toxicity and its association with clinical factors and gastrointestinal microbiome among breast cancer patients in Vietnam.”
